Please help me turn this into an amazing family room!
Hi,
We just moved into this house, and I am having trouble with this room. It's in the centre of the house and it is never used other than to walk to the kitchen or dining area. I would like a cosy informal living area, where we could either watch tv or have a coffee & still have space for playing & toys. I have several problems (mostly layout):

1) TV is in current position because of the aerial, but means people will be walking right in front of the TV. Where else could it go?

2) I hate the sofa (old ikea karlstad) & I am unsure of what furniture to get before the layout is sorted out. It's also too far away from the TV, but blocks the door if any closer. TV bench and chair don't have to stay.

3) Factors that make layout difficult (for me anyway): two doorways in the corner and open plan dining/kitchen makes it hard to put anything in there without blocking something. Gas hob is behind sofa (would be good if this was accessible to use a heater).

Looking forward to hearing all ideas!

stevensobti Hi, so you have a great space that just needs configuration. First of all I would take out all the furniture and start anew. After that i would put the TV in the corner of the two walls with either a corner tv stand or an electric fireplace underneath. That way you can also watch TV while working in the kitchen. After that a L-shaped couch facing the tv would would work great! A new center table with a new area rug would make the place look cozy but not too tight either. I would also put a storage chest or shelves where the TV is right now for storage for toys and extra things. Hope this helps!

thislittlehouse Swap your meals area and current tv area. Then you'll be able to walk past a dining table instead of walking through a sitting/tv area.

esilele Thanks for the suggestions! I never thought about putting the TV in the corner. That would solve many of the problems.

I had thought about swapping the rooms also and I would love to do that- but the problem there is that there is nowhere to put the TV without blocking the windows.

rinqreation I'd build a 5ft high wall to place the tv on, put a table and a L-shaped couch (or a diner-booth) in the niche. Then a nice large wooden closet against the wall where the tv used to be.
