Against the microwave laws??????
Okay can anyone tell me if they have installed an electrolux microwave under a built in oven. Everything I have read states it MUST be 36" from the floor. I can't put mine this high or my wall oven will be on the ceiling. I have not purchased the micro yet but really am wanting to, it is a great buy!!!! Why does the microwave police say it must be 36" high??? Is this a fire safety issue???? Any infor you can assist me with will be GREATLY appreciated:) Thank you:)

Scott Design, Inc. Suggest you call Electrolux Customer Service and ask your questions with the Model Number in hand. In the meantime, I have never heard of the 36" high rule in 25 years of kitchen design and installation.

Sharp makes a microwave drawer that typically goes under a counter and sits approximately 15-18" above the floor. Because the drawer pulls out and the controls are on an angle, access to the interior is much more convenient than leaning down and looking into a microwave and at the controls. Per the Sharp spec shee re: micro drawer : "Built-in Ready: Yes, this Microwave Drawer Oven can be installed below any electric or gas wall oven."

groveraxle Good luck with Electrolux. Here is a discussion forum where someone asked the same question:
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/appl/msg1014132924141.html

And here is a possible answer from one of the commenters there:
"When I was considering getting an Advantum, I called GE to find out what was the issue with putting it under the counter. And what they told me was "all microwave ovens are supposed to be above the counter for safety reasons". I asked what those reasons were, and he wouldn't specify, but stated that is a requirement for microwave ovens in general."

General consensus seems to be that it's CYA for the manufacturers, but that installing it lower should be fine. Good luck.

Scott Design, Inc. There is a big difference between microwave only units and microwave/convection combination units.

Microwaves do not generate burn risk heat from venting and can be placed at lower levels without concern for burning small children.

The COMBINATION UNITS generate high enough heat that when it is vented out from below presents a burn risk to small children.

Brief comment on the Advantium: There are two models both of which generate a significant amount of heat however, GE has approached the problem as follows:

120 volt model - " CAUTION: If installing the Advantium 120V Oven below 36″, do not remove the
plastic door trim due to burn risk to children. The plastic trim acts as insulation and will help
prevent burns to children from hot surfaces."

240 volt model -"CAUTION: For personal safety, this oven cannot be installed
in a cabinet arrangement such as an island or peninsula. The oven must be installed at least 36-3/4" above the floor. Cabinets installed adjacent to wall ovens must have an adhesion spec of at least 194ºF
temperature rating."

There is not an insulation strip that can withstand the heat generated by this Advantium model as of yet. Therefore, if you put it below a countertop it is a definite burn risk for small children.
