Advice to cheer up my entrance?
I have a cute brick porch in front of my house but one of those configurations that makes everyone come in the side door, and my side entry is much less than cute.
I could really use suggestions for livening it up a bit for this summer. The summer photo is 2011, the winter photo is earlier today. (Last summer I did purple chairs and purple petunias and it was reasonably cute but not at all "wow")
I'm single but handy- so no major renovations possible but are there products that would make swapping out that lattice with something classier looking a DIY day project?

Pamela Bateman Garden Design Go to Houzz products then Outdoor and then look up DIY Railings. There is a company called Deck Expressions where you can get ideas for railings and post. I would also beef up the post that holds up the roof. Flowering annuals would look nice planted between the small shrubs but perhaps the picture was taken in winter and you have flowers there in spring and summer. Perhaps there is a DIY planter box that could go under the pop out window. A climbing rose up the post on the left would look nice. Don't know what climate you are in but one favorite rose is 'Eden' climbing rose. Available at www.heirloomroses.com.

njmomma I would paint the lattice railing white, add a table between the rocking chairs and maybe a large ceramic pot with flowers near the entrance to the steps. For some reason tonight I have been suggesting outdoor wall art, so here I go again. Next to the window I would add some color. Outdoor Wall Art:

www.etsy.com/shop/NewJerseyAccents I second replacing the stair rail. The latticework, just isn't working. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and look at the white composite railing kits they have. You can use the existing 4x4 posst you have, because they make a sleeve that slips right over them. Come spring rake out the garden and treat it to some new mulch, it makes the garden neat looking and helps block weeds.

The Cable Connection Checkout our DIY stainless steel cable railing kits as an option to replace that lattice. They are easy to install.

cypress Another type railing might look better than the lattice, but If you unsure of your capabilities, I would first paint the lattice the same color (white) as the posts, then place a "balcony railing" flower box on top, filled with flowers. Place another flower box under the window near the light fixture, that would fill in the void under the overhang. Replacing the light fixture and painting your door (purple) would give a pop of color to the space.
