JDM Countertops, Inc. You can go many different directions. It would help to see the stone better. Both ideas above are good. Attached are a variety of options. Since you're kitchen is not totally contemporary and has a touch of a traditional feel to it. You can do subway, but to maybe bring in a darker element from your stone and enhance your hardware you can do a metal liner like below. It depends if you want your back splash to blend, to enhance the colors in your stone, or to pop.
William Roy Designer Kitchens Please, use some color and don't be predictable like subway tiles or a horizontal feature strip down the middle. Spend a few extra dollars here as you have little space to fill. Have fun.
PS. I would avoid putting a fancy back splash there but instead find a cool shelf made of stainless steel and glass and mount it in that big space above the sink.
