segsmg This reminds me of my house. Could you give me the site where you post on Garden Web so I can follow? Thanks.

Granite Grannies Those black cabinet are killer gorgeous!!! I'm in the process of painting mine to look just like that.

As far as the rest of the kitchen, I would definitely recommend changing the wall tile. It looks to be exactly the same thing as the floor....and the shape is clearly a floor tile. The wall tile makes it look more like a bathroom or laundry room. I'd also suggest switching out the dishwasher to black or stainless so it's not so stark against the cabinets. Changing the counter to a stone with some pattern and energy might help break up grid of the tile and the subdued color scheme.

The exterior is really nice. Your probably won't need to do more than tweak it. You may want to remove those wood half walls on the sides of the steps or replace them with something a little more shapely in a different material. Adding some curves to the patio and the path leading away would help balance out the straight lines of the roof and garden. You might consider adding some more wispy or whimsical garden elements, whether they are flowers, tall decorative grasses, or trees.

I love the floor in the living room! That room should be easy to decorate.

You could consider adding a warmer color to the bathroom to contrast the browns and blacks throughout the house (which I love!). Maybe a warm gold or a bright primary color.

Congratulations on your first house, and have fun making it just the way you want it.

lamessick Granite Grannies Thank you for the response! I love all those ideas!! I am in the middle of purchasing Stainless Steel appliances for the kitchen (including dishwasher) :) . I also will be sanding the oak floors and staining but not quite sure on a stain color yet.

Again thank you so much for the comments!

PamDesigns 3D What a lovely starter home! Looks like something I would love decorating were it mine! I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun with it.

The black cabinets are quite contrasting with the rest of the finishes in the kitchen. I get where they were trying to tie in the white appliances by adding a white accent glaze to the cabinetry. Looks like a lot (but not all) of the rest of the trim has been painted black as well. I think if you'd like to keep the black, at least re paint the cabinets and eliminate the white glaze detail. I would repaint the trim on the pass through, columns doors and window frames to match the baseboard and window casings. It would brighten the space and create a less busy foundation for adding your own furnishings.

Good luck with your new home! I'd love to see what every changes you do and when you fill the spaces with your own touches. =)

wishingwell120 So cute! Would you consider changing your front door?
lamessick wishingwell120 ... YES! I have been looking everywhere for double entry doors but I can't seem to find any within reasonable budget. They are all so expensive and I am new to fixing up houses so I haven't found the best place for discounted items.

However, I do love that door! If you dont mind me asking, where is this from?

fuzinav Consider removing the knee wall inthe entryway as well as the two low wall/fences outside your front door. They are a bit dated and not necessary.

handymam I like the idea of the new door wishingwell suggested, but until then or if it's out of your budget, I suggest painting it one solid color and making it a color. Red perhaps. Add black shutters. Congrats on the new home!

Granite Grannies Have you tried looking at auctions/ second hand home good stores for the doors? I know by us (in Baltimore MD) are two places called Second Chance and Southern Sales that sell crazy discounted second hand home parts (everything from cabinets to doors to windows to furniture). I've gotten some really great stuff there that looks like new! I'll give you the links in case you are nearby: http://www.southernsalesservices.com/ and http://www.secondchanceinc.org/

nikitasmom The exterior is nice but a mishmash of colors. If you keep the fence then stain or paint them to match the car port posts and do the same with the shutters. The bush next to the house while nicely trimmed seems to be getting too big and too high. Agree with the suggestion to look into changing the backsplash in the kitchen and with wall color in bathroom.
You could look into going with one door and transoms which is cheaper. I am thinking of doing the same thing. Another idea is to see if you have someone in your area who could convert them. See this link for ideas http://doorconversion.com/

Keitha It would make a big difference to the outside of your house to paint your existing doors the color of your shutters... They are great doors. Then like others have said, remove the fencing and lastly, beef up the carport post to be a little thicker, trimming them out in a crown moulding effect and paint them your trim color so they blend in. Hope this helps!
