Does This Table Work????
Tried to match my new custom ordered table and chairs to my floors and cabinets. Just not sure how I'm feeling about it. I tend to be too matchy matchy!! So my concern is whether it looks ok or not?? The top had a small crack so it will be replaced. This is my time to make any changes if I want to. There were lots of options but other woods didn't look good and I am kind of getting a colonial feel that i don't like. Ignore red rug it will be getting replaced. It looks different every way i look. Please HELP!!

Interiors International, Inc. I really hate matchy. It creates a very dull uninteresting space. Adding different woods, colors and textures adds personality. That is what people see and like in the designer rooms you see on this site.

Aggie Purvinska Your table is quite stunning, if anything, the chairs are too generic for my taste. I like the seagrass chair that's in the corner much better or slip cover these guys..

feeny I love both the table and chairs!

carolfiorello How is the contrast with floor and cabinet.????

diananjohn I like the table and chairs. I think adding a little color would help (ie colorful rug, accent colored candles and may be one coloful art piece on the wall, decorative blinds- pattern cloth is trendy.

carolfiorello Yes, still have to buy rug, something for center of table, walls etc.

Aja Mazin Beautiful!

kellis1977 I would try different chairs to add more texture. I believe that would break up the matchy-matchy concerns that you may have.

carolfiorello @ AngieDesigns---I have 2 of the seagrass chairs which I wanted to incorporate. Possibly take the two chairs from this set and use elsewhere. What kind of chair covers work with a hardwood chair??
I know this will pull together when I get accessories. What do you think of floor and cabinets with this?

Genevieve You said a Colonial feel , I don't see it! if it was Colonial the chairs would be different ,what sort of a base does your table have ? can you please post a picture of it . Your chairs are Mission Style .

carolfiorello Table had a crack to it's being repaired so I don't have a picture of base. But I made sure it had a pedistal that did not have that look, it's just plain, no scrolls, chairs have straight lines too.

Aggie Purvinska I like everything, honestly, for the slipcover I would use some kind of "natural" grayish linen, but you could also do a fun printed fabric, polka dot or floral, whatever strikes your fancy... [houzz=Set of Two Suzie Slipper Chairs]

carolfiorello Great ideas everybody!! My old -fashioned way of wanting to match things keeps trying to get back at me. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks!

carolfiorello A solid color top?? No pedistal?

Aja Mazin carolfiorello,

I am confused.
I am presently making slip covers for 2 parson's chairs but, how do you cover wooden chairs?

I like your table very much.
No colonial feel!

I particularly like the wood you choose for the top.
May I ask the type of wood and finish, please?

twylahaj Table and chairs are both lovely. If you change out the rug to something bright and colorful, add something colorful to the center of the table in place of the too matching candle sticks and some bright and fun artwork, I think it will be enough of a change that you enjoy it. If it's possible, changing the light fixture would also help.

tamara682 Take away the candles. Change the rug. I like the table and chairs.

carolfiorello @Aja Mazin. Maybe I misunderstood, thought somebody said slip covers which confused me. Not sure what type of wood but finish is cottage oak. The table and chairs by John Thomas. Many styles and colors. Guess that's how I got confused. I know I have a lot more to get for this room but light fixture is new and now someone mentions a new one. This decorating is stressing me out. Thought I liked my fixture now I'll be worrying about that too. Matches the fixture in center of kitchen

carolfiorello @tamara682. Need new rug, this one is just protecting new wood floor. Yes the candles are going soon too. Thanks to liking table & chairs.

Jean Tuck I think table and chairs are very nice and co-ordinate with wooden floor, The rug I would choose might be a larger than table size for more spacious look, and Id use the harlequin paper on One wall only around window I think. Now Im older so thats how id do it You have a good start already good luck and share finished lookwe all can learn from one another.Maybe just white sheers to keep space light and happy. Hope it good for you when its done If you use patterned rug then plain drapes. patterened drapes then plain rug.

carolfiorello @Jean Tuck. Thanks, this just isn't fun anymore. I have doubted everything I've done at one time or another.

jjdesignkloos hey carol...i feel your discouragement....I think you have chosen a beautiful table, chairs, and light fixture! Just trust yourself--and continue making choices you love!

DIAspoton there's that 'match' word again. fixtures don't need to match and they may be new but the styles have been around awhile. go for some sparkle.

very pretty table and chairs.
slipcovering the chairs in a flax or print would be a nice option. however i prefer just swapping 2 for the seagrass. colorful art on 1 wall and a large mirror on the other.
have you thought of adding a chair rail?

hang a decorative curtain rod 6-10" above the top of the window and hang colorful print, heavy panels to the floor.

a larger bright , patterned rug would be pretty.try something completely unexpected. get out of your comfort zone and surprise your friends. and yourself!

blindsdirectcanada I agree the table is Fab however I think you need to add more texture to the chairs . Maybe chair covers or replacing them. It will really made a difference.

Aja Mazin carolfiorello,

You asked the question:

"Does This Table Work????"

There are two problems:

1.] Some people do not read

2.] but feel free to to given unwanted advice.

I happen to love your light fixture.

Don't let one person's opinion sway you.

Aja Mazin NOTE: Ignore red rug it will be getting replaced.

Toni Reno Colby The table and chairs are great and it sounds like you'll be updating with a new carpet and table top accessories, which will make it even better. I agree with swapping two of the chairs with the seagrass, placing the other two that match the set in the corners.

carolfiorello @tonette1020 That's what I'm thinking with the seagrass chairs. We moved into a home, changed all wood work, floors and cabinets. Now trying to add pieces of furniture we needed. This has been harder than I ever expected!

twylahaj Sorry to have added stress with the suggested light fixture change. Didn't realize it coordinates with another or would never have suggested changing it. It is a very nice fixture, but you seemed concerned about things being too traditional, which was why I mentioned it. Still think with a different rug and some bright accessories it'll be beautiful and the furniture itself is really, really lovely.

Don't let any of us stress you out. Free advice (which I give a lot of) is often worth exactly what you pay for it, so take it all with a grain of salt. The advice people give is like looking through a decorating book or reading a magazine. You look through, take the ideas you like, adapt ideas that are close, and ignore the rest and you end up with something that is uniquely you and perfect for your tastes and needs.

Can't imagine doing all you have done already. You are doing great and obviously have good taste.

cjohnston Your table and chair set is lovely! I can see where the various wood tones could be throwing you off right now since there isn't much separation between the table/chairs and floor, but once you have the new rug, everything will fall into place. No worries!

carolfiorello Thanks for everyone's help. This has been a big job and we're not done yet. You'll be seeing a lot of me!!
