What to do with kitchen cabinets, stain, paint, change out
The cabinets in our condo are need of some updating and repair. They are about 10 years old and look decent in these photos but near the sink and other heavy use areas are showing signs of use. Additionally we would like them to be darker, along with the floors. We have had several contractors over to I've us quotes and their opinions on what can be done. Several have noted that the sides of the island and end caps, and the middle sections of the doors are plywood. We would like to have the cabinets restrained but several people have told us that staining won't work or look good because of the plywood. Additionally we have talked about painting the cabinets white or maybe gray, but can't seem to agree on a color. Obviously new cabinets are possible but with the additional costs of new countertops, it may make that option to costly.

I'd love some opinions and feedback on what we should do. Our place generally speaking is a loft style condo. Exposed, 14 foot ceilings, and our taste is modern, simple, and comfortable.

More Than Murals We offer dyed lacquer finishes for cabinets. As long as they are structurally sound changing the color is no problem. Go from blonde/ honey oak to dark espresso, or any custom color in between. The cabinets in the photo were the same color as yours.

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders You indicate that some repair is needed - depends upon the extent of repairs. With plywood panels, I don't think I would try to restain the cabinetry. I would have any needed repairs done and have a professional painter paint them. A tauple or gray would be a great.

diyher who mentioned you can't stain plywood? many cabinet boxes are plywood because of strength.
Doors on good cabinets are normally solid wood. I sanded down cabinets from the 1970's from previous owner and redid them 1990. I bought new unstained doors and matched them to what I re-stained the cabinets. I'm doing the same to the cabinets in the new house 1995 18 years later. Maybe yours are made out of MDF? or part particle board? From what I heard about the price of a professional painting cabinets from another post here, they were going to charge her $15,000 just to paint them. At that cost, you could buy cabinets and install them yourself if you were handy.

diyher Have you thought of just painting the cabinets and buying new doors to match? seems like you don't have too many doors that it would be too costly for you.

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders Wow, $15K for painting cabinets - must be a whole house full. We are charged somewhere in the range of $2,500 to $3,000 for exterior. It would be more for the interior.

Ironwood Builders Deborah is right! When we start from scratch my painter charges less than $5K for the whole house...in NorCal!

diyher Deborah, I was shocked at that price too. It was only the kitchen cabinets this woman mentioned. I'm thinking whoever they asked didn't really want to do it, so charged an outrageous price to deter them.
you're pricing isn't really that bad if the person doesn't have the time or know how to do it themselves.

calikym I like the color and style of your cabinets already! The look nice!! What about adding a bright pop of backsplash - glass or porcelain tiles.

intoit I agree with calikym. Just repair the cabinets and get some color into the room with paint, backsplash or rugs.

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders We think it's a reasonable price too for cleaning, sanding, removing hardware and hinges and spraying the exterior of cabinets. This painter does a good job too. This assumes average size kitchen.

My concern in this case about staining was that the recessed panel of the cabinet doors are plywood and I would be afraid it would stain differently than the stiles and rails of the door. Maybe that can be controlled??? We have not done it but have seen a faux painter darken a stained kitchen to look like dark cherry. Guy said he paid $4K for that - also avg size kitchen.
