Need help with kitchen cabinets
I have natural honey oak cabinets (many of them) and they are old and ugly after 22 years of use. They are still in perfect shape, just cosmetically ugly. I wanted to paint them but people say oak doesn't look good painted and that I wouldn't get a smooth finish. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone suggest any products to use to get a smooth finish? Thank you

PH Interiors, LLC I say go ahead and have them professionally painted (white). Yes, you may still see the outlines of the grain, but that's OK. It will make a world of difference just painting them. If you have your heart set on smooth cabinets, I suggest having them refaced in a wood veneer - stained or painted. This will give you new doors and drawer fronts in any style/color you want.

onthefence There are products available called grain fillers. I don't know how well they work or what the cost would be. If you want a result with no grain visible at all, it might be something to test.

Personally, I like the looks of painted oak and don't mind the pattern of the grain at all.
