What to do with a Living Room?
I want to paint, do window treatments (keeping the shades in bay window), but I can't seem to make a decision on colors. I need help since I am also working on other rooms as well. The windows face west

Karen Mattson sorry..it was a panoramic view so it posted sideways...

decoenthusiaste Others post panoramics here and the do fine. Can you tweak? You may not get many responses if it isn't easy to see.

decoenthusiaste Actually, we prefer simple shots of each wall in the room, rather that a warped panoramic that throws off the size and feel of your space.

Karen Mattson Actually....The pictures are almost exactly true to what the room looks like. They are better than iook a bunch of singe shots because the room is so chopped up. As you can see the dining room in connected right with it and I have that one wall where the upholstered chair is that project out (kitchen is on the other side). That projection, of course, doesn't line up to other linear lines on the opposite wall.
Then behind the wall where the picture of Mt. Mc Kinley is almost 1/2 wall. There is a lower lever. We hung a decorative wood and glass door there instead of wrought iron railing.
If you really want me to do single shots I will

taospines What a nice big space. But with the couches placed at that angle it looks like you are trying to make it one big room. I think the couches should face one another, shove them both towards the window so you can look out while you talk. I think there would be lots of room to move out the opening on that end. Its nice you don't have a TV to worry about. I would put two small chairs and a table/lamp combo where the one chair is now. As for color, just my opinion, but sage green would be nice, you would have to loose the blue artwork then. Hope this helps.

Karen Mattson Well, this is downright hilarious to me. That second picture was not panoramic and taken portrait style. Why it posted this way is beyond me. If you run your cursor over it you do see more of the room though.

taospines Wait what is the wall couch hiding? is that a fireplace or what?

Karen Mattson It is a 1/2 wall.. that had a wrought iron railing for out lower level family room. We now have a decorative glass and wood door that is huIng there. Much more beautiful to look at.

taospines Well, at some point you could get those blinds that go from the bottom up to hide anything outside but still see the trees. And I don't dislike the colors on the walls now. Put the Alaska pictures somewhere else...like a hall, you have such a nice neutral theme going. I will just also say the accent colors of both rooms need to match-ish. Purple and that red? over the diningroom window is not good. I would just take that down. I hope I am not sounding harsh...I am trying to get ideas for a new house we are building and it is HARD to decorate.

Karen Mattson If you look closely I do have blinds on the those windows or else when the sun shines in the afternoon it blinds you. It helps with the heating and cooling of the house also. I did have valances hanging there that matched the ones in the dining room. I also had a different (more traditional picture hanging (not the blue Alaska mts) up until 2 days ago. I've been playing around, trying to get ideas on colors, etc. and trying to get out of the box of traditional decorating. Thanks for all the suggestions so far!!

Manon Floreat For window treatments, I think I would consider a shade over the sliders instead of curtains. The effect will be something like the below.

I like how, the window covering color blends in with the wall, allowing the art and furnishings to be the focus. You could think along the same lines, as you seem to have a nice art collection.

Karen Mattson Manon, most of the art work are my photos from travels and I love that because it truly provides a story. So what paint color would you suggest? I was thinking a slightly warmer tone (unfortunately the pics kind of give off a yellowish look and it's not). The walls are just an off white color. Do you think I should put a rug under the coffee table, get a large ottoman instead if coffee table? I am also planning on changing the lamps to add color.

decoenthusiaste I think you should bump up the purple theme you've already touched on. Start with a great area rug!

Manon Floreat I like the wall color you have now. It seems to be a good back drop for art. Here area few others you could look into. They have a little more bottom than what you currently have, but I think are still light enough to not compete with your art.

1 - Reliable White - SW
2 - Maison Blanche - SW
3 - Tapestry Beige - BM

Speaking of art, you might want to think about grouping your pieces ala gallery style for more impact. Perhaps the wall where the purple chair is would be a good spot.

I like that your art is from your travels. You could consider building on this with even more "worldly" elements. How do you feel about kilims? See below for options.

Karen Mattson Great! You have all actually given me some confirmations on some ideas I was thinking about like playing up the purple (I grew up in a blue house and have two other areas that are blue). Then using more of our travel art and making it into more of a gallery look. Sorry I had not responded earlier to your wonderful suggestions but I found myself in the hospital having unexpected surgery this past week. One question...what do you all think about an area rug on carpet?

carole get well soon! ! as to the rug just do it!!!your carpet is one color so you can pick whichever rug you want,no clashing pattern.....i know it is probably not the perfect way,but if you love to have the rug,why not,we all love to have a happy home, and we all know happy has nothing to do with perfect!!it is usualy the small imperfections that make it home....
