Kitchen Update Advice Please
I would like an updated look but need cabinet advice and am open to other thoughts as well How "out" is oak? Paint or reface? We really don't have the budget to do all new. I'm torn between a cream with glaze and something darker like walnut but don't want to end up with something outdated right off the bat.
My counters are an ugly green Formica that I would like to replace with a quartz, perhaps Canterbury Cambria, so that will be a hefty piece of the budget. The backsplash is painted on and I don't know whether to go with a ceramic or glass tile. The floors are oak and a friend in the flooring business has offered to assist me in refinishing. But what color for cabinets and floor stain? The woodwork in my entire house is this same oak. How Ok is it to mix woods?
As you can see, I need some type of direction. But I do love all the space my kitchen has...it's just the aesthetics...

If your whole house has those same oak floors you probably don't want to change the color of those as it will lead to weird transitions from room to room. My own personal taste is that two different color stains on wood are less compatible than one stain and one paint, in case that is helpful.
I will also add that the kitchen is really quite nice as it is and just some pops of color in window treatments, chair cushions, and displayed dishes along with the new counters (and backsplash?) that you already have planned might be enough to help you learn to love your kitchen again without as much work and investment as you're considering....
