Need help with kitchen...island or no island
February 11, 2013 in Design Dilemma
Hello All--I tore down the wall between my kitchen and dinning room. The main sewer line was in wall therefore we had to create a column for all the pipes. Now, that the space is open I'm not sure how I can make the best use of the area. Should I incoporate the column into an island or leave it as one open area with cabinets running from kitchen into the dining room. I would make the cabinets in the dining area 12"depth with granite serving and something more decorative...no wall cabinets.

It's hard to tell how much space you have from these pictures, but I think it would be nice to incorporate the column into the island. Islands are great for adding counterspace to an open floorplan. You could have the granite go around most of the column and cover the column in a stacked stone. However, you don't have a ton of open space, so you if you chose to leave an island out, I don't think it would be too open. Hope that helps!

Thanks...the space is 35' x 27'. I like the idea of stone on the column.

This bar isn't actually touching the column, but you can get an idea from the perspective of what it would look like. Davidsonville,MD Custom Country Estate

Here are some other kitchens with column/ island combos

I think you should stay away from this look: Luxury European Kitchen - the column looking like its sitting on top....it just seems so awkward and heavy looking.

I like these arrangements:
