olldbobbi There are basically two different types of paint, latex (water based) or oil. Oil is a bit more difficult to apply but will wear better. Latex is more commonly used, and it cleans up with soap and water.
Either will work fine. The key is in the prep. If you don't prep your project well neither paint will be successful.
Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders By cupboard do you mean cabinet doors? If so, there are lacquer paints that can be used that would be preferable to oil or latex, but you need to have the proper equipment and space in order to properly apply lacquer.
tamaltree Thanks. This is useful! Yes I meant cabinet doors. What kind of wood or board do I need for the doors to apply paint then? Thank you very much for your help!
Ironwood Builders tamaltree, There are a few types of wood that don't take paint well. Heavy oily woods, like teak are the kind I mean. Most other kinds of wood will, so long as it is dry, clean and has a slightly rough surface for the paint to adhere to. If you are not a professional or an advanced amateur, don't try for the lacquer. It is toxic and highly flammable. Is that the information you were after?
tamaltree Yes wonderful , thank you very much. I will keep in mind not to use teak, also I am not a professional so perhaps I should not go for lacquer paints...
olldbobbi tamaltree, you'll do fine, it's not that hard. But if you can afford it, I would suggest have the doors professionally sprayed, it will look much better. And painting the hinges looks very amateur, don't forget to remove them!
