Bathroom lighting
What's your opinion-
Bathroom vanity light over the sink facing up or down?
I think facing down may be harsh for applying makeup, but facing up you might get shadows. Would love some feedback.

Dytecture Depending on the design of the light fixture, having them faced down would minimize dust collection around the light bulb. Ideally you can install a dimmer switch to adjust the level of intensity.

Tamara Heather Interior Design, LLC Typically I prefer sconces to face up for the softer effect of bouncing light off the ceiling (they do not cast harsh shadows this way), But if the shades are frosted or semi-opaque glass (not fully opaque) I think they can orient down and the light will be diffused. I designed one bathroom where this was the case and it works ok - however, in that instance I used a supplemental ceiling fixture which helps to spread the light more evenly around the room.

Southern Patina Interiors Tamara - I agree that an overhead would take care of the down lighting issue.
On the picture you posted - I love the medicine cabinet. I've seen similar on line and they're upwards of $500 - too expensive for my budget. Suggestions??

Southern Patina Interiors No way Tamara - thank you so very much - that's exactly what I'm looking for.
Are you happy with it - is it holding up??

Southern Patina Interiors Tamara - sorry for another question - who makes your sink. I'm shopping for a pedestal sink and with so many options, I'm going a little crazy.

Tamara Heather Interior Design, LLC The cabinet is holding up fine, but to be fair it's in a powder room which doesn't get heavy use. The sink and console base are by Porcher.

Judy M If you are remodeling and installing new lights having them moved to sconces on each side of the mirror gives better lighting for applying makeup.

If you are just replacing lights that are already over the mirror , then I guess it's a toss up. Many lights will specify if they can only be hung light up or light down or will specify either is ok. some bulbs get very hot, so for those facing down is not recommended unless there is a bulb cover.

I learned all this while researching lighting for my bathroom remodel.

Jemden Interiors I love to have wall lights in bathrooms on either side of the mirror. I have previously used frosted lights and also lights with shades and I think they both work well.

LB Interiors Is it a powder room or bath for applying make up? I designed a powder room using a swag as the electrical would have to change. Being that it is a powder room, there is sufficient light for the clients to create the ambiance that they wished in this particular situation. Side sconces for make up. Up for ambiance. Maybe down for more light if needed. Opaque glass or shades will lessen the light emittted. Clear glass or shades will provide brighter light. Sorry, you may already know that.
