Kitchen help (ideas)
I will be moving into this house in a week..yay me!! Since we are going to be first time homebuyers don't want to over spend. The previous owner had put in Ikea freestanding kitchen and it looks so bland, the only thing I can think of is changing the layout to an L shaped and adding a corner base cabinet and opening up that back wall where there used to be a window but they covered it up, Any thoughts, ideas would be helpful!!

Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design Bigger clock, industrial with some black details. Repaint the room in a braver color; Green, Blue, Gray. If you can, move the cabinet further from the fridge. Add stacked dishes, jars, cookbooks on the open shelves.

AMN I'm having trouble getting oriented. Where would the L shape be formed in the room?

So you'd put a window back in where the sink is? I think that would be helpful. Natural light is a very good thing in a kitchen.

Whatever you do, please consider upgrading the lighting. Is that a fluorescent fixture on the ceiling? Warming up the lighting will make an enormous difference. This looks like a kitchen found in a church basement or something as it is right now. I look forward to seeing what you do with the space!

I see a lot of inspiration in the pictures on this LINK: http://www.houzz.com/photos/modern/kitchen/farmhouse-
- A bit of farmhouse + a little touch of modern + a dash of industrial would look great here. Lighting is essential though!

keekatie I agree with paint color. That can make a world of difference . Have you considered getting rid of cabinet by the fridge and doing a custom storage unit further down, possibly the same height as the island in the middle with storage underneath and a over sized mirror hanging above? Also possibly a pot wrack hanging above the island for added storage.

Marilyn Wilkie Go to the Ikea website and go to the Kitchen Planner. They will have your free standing cabinets in the planner. You can then plug in the measurements, cabinets, appliances, doors, window, etc. and play with the design until you get one you like.

Dezign Studio Inc To have a corner base , you will have to move the sink cabinet next to the dishwasher. Then on the other side of the corner cab, put the stove and if possible a drawer cabinet. Then you can either put the fridge or pantry next to the drawers. The table can be turned around or centered.

Roxanne backsplash is somekind of stainless steel frame its glued on the wall and yeah there is a freestanding kitchen island has two drawers and two bottom cabinets, that first pic layout is something that i was thinking about. Everything is movable ..this is the other side

Laura Pollard, Designer/PM, Bravehart Building I would definitely re-open that window, as it's a relatively inexpensive way to bring some much needed natural light into the room. An L-shaped peninsula with an overhang, creates a good quick dining/conversation area with some stools underneath. While I usually spec a stainless steel backsplash behind a stove/cook top, the one in your kitchen really gives it a commercial look. I would look into installing a glass tile backsplash in all other areas. Please feel free to check out some of the kitchens I've done for inspiration. Good luck!
