Ideas for kitchen island?
Anyone have ideas for what to do in here? We are wanting to remove the existing island, and replace it with a larger one with seating. We also want to put in new hardware, new sink, appliances, lighting and countertops. We have already replaced the floors with hardwood and removed the spaceship light fixture.

Karoline Kable, ASID This is an exciting project!!! Hardware: there are too many pulls we need knobs for the cabinets and pulls for the drawers only. How dark are your hardwood floors? New sink how much do you want to spend? Also how much for appliances? Also if you want a complete room plan done for inexpensive you should check out www.halfandhalfdesigns.com. Such a fun project! Enjoy it!!

wmpj It doesn't look like a larger island will fit. Did you remove the existing island before laying down the hardwood flooring? You may be able to fit a larger island if you have the length of it extend towards the patio doors. However, that will leave the kitchen without room for a table.

nFORMAL design Way to plug your firm, Karoline! Ha. Big kitchen, and the cabinets look to be in good shape, but there is a lot of updating needed. Do you have the newer images? What is your budget...start there and make a list of things you like. Ideabooks are a start.

nFORMAL design @wmpj... there are many options they have to extend the island. Hiring a professional will save them a lot of time, headaches and maybe even money in the long run.

Dytecture Consider combing the island with breakfast table in order to have larger working area.

countbla I would say most important thing to fix is getting some sort of vent for the cooktop ! Either something hanging from ceiling (which probably won't look too good with existing type of cabinetry, or will be way too big if you try to get something custom with a wood surround) - a downdraft cooktop is likely your only solution if you leave cooktop there (hopefully there.s a basement or crawlspace under that kitchen.
Visually, the cabinet door style is busy and there are way too many identical doors, changing out even just the corner upper cabinet doors to a matching style with glass panels would break up the repetition.
Countertop material will also be influenced by the type of hardwood that you have installed but is not visible in the picture.
Bright brass cabinet hardware looks dated to me unless you're going for a specific look (English Pub?) with all the other changes.
