Help with finishing touches for new family room?
Hi Houzzers... Our family completed an addition last year, so we now have an open kitchen and great/family room. As you can see, I love a neutral palette, but I think I need to add a pattern via rug, throw pillows, curtains, lamp, etc. While our style is predominantly traditional, I would like to thrown in a transitional pattern (two color Moroccan lattice?). Please advise!

decoenthusiaste Here are some ideas for you. Do pick an accent color for your neutral palette - it will warm the space a lot, as will drapery. Personally, I'm a little tired of the Moroccan tile, but in a neutral it might not wear on you. I'd stick with your traditional vibe and add a bit of color in the curtain pattern to go with the accent color you choose for pillows, throws, etc.

Denice Shuty Yes, your style is very American-traditional. Do a very large area rug and pull colors/textures from there. Where are your reading lamps? End tables? Is there only overhead lighting? With no wall space there's nowhere to hang art, do wallpaper, or do other furniture, so your color can only come from the rug and pillows. That's why the above room ideas won't work for you - they have draperies, wall art, table lamps and accessories that you can't do with your current furniture and layout. I don't like the cellular shades, they add nothing to this room. Fitted fabric shades with some color and pattern would be better. Do fabric shades with a pattern/color that coordinates with a rug and pillows.

lcmorse02 Since the couch is a sage color and the walls are Alexandria Beige by Benjamin Moore, what accent color would you suggest incorporating? We have a brick red wall in an adjacent living room but I'm not a fan of green and red. Plum? Gold or too neutral? Thank you!

Denice Shuty I like coral and dark brown with your beige and sage. If you don't want to part with the cellular shades then do custom-made fabric-upholstered cornices over the windows. That will give some dimension to the flat wall surfaces since they project outward a little. That will help to balance the projecting heaviness of fireplace stone.

nononanna A combination of plum and gold would be pretty. You have a huge amount of window space, so if you start adding drapes it will have a serious impact on the space. I too am tired of the whole morocccan thing. Try putting something like the plant in front of the window beside the fireplace, and change the lampshade on the lamp to the left of the sofa, possibly a print on the barstools and chairs around the table...

cjohnston If I could ask, what color is your sectional? It looks green in some pictures, brown in others.

lcmorse02 Thanks everyone for your feedback! It's a dark sage green sectional: http://www.raymourflanigan.com/foresthill-2pc-microfiber-sectional-sofa-283292705.aspx

The blinds are actually painted white wood blinds and I would prefer to keep them and add drapes around the large set of windows. I'm assuming I should not do anything to the windows flanking the fireplace but would like to hear your thoughts.

I love the idea of accent color and pattern to break of the monotony of the room. If lattice is on it's way out, what can I do that's eye catching, timeless and with a bit of a contemporary edge?

Finally, we have two toddlers so kid friendly furnishings are important.

Thanks all!

anitajoyce Your spaces look really nice. You could add a nice rug with some color in it. An end table or two with lamps would be nice also.

Denice Shuty Do the cornices on the windows flanking the fireplace in the same fabric as the drapes on the large set of windows. Allow yourself the freedom to change your rug as styles change. You don't need to spend a fortune on the rug, so replace it every 5 years to keep the room looking fresh for yourself.

cjohnston I love your room! You have some great furniture and finishes. Here are some ideas for accessorizing your space. Consider a beige rug (similar to your wall color), in a shag style, or a tonal geometric. Either will work well with your darker floor and sectional. There are tons of patterned rugs, but a simpler rug allows more flexibility with other accessories. I think turquoise would be a nice accent color. If it's not for you, just replace the turquoise items with another color.

Keitha I suggest drapery panels for the 3 window wall and coordinating roman shades on the windows on the sides of the fireplace

Julie Thome Draperies, Inc. Your windows are really only suited to shades in my opinion. One option if you did not want to go with pattern is to choose a solid colored linen perhaps and trim 3 side over the romans with a decorative tape such as this one.....http://www.fschumacher.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?sku=66152

Or go with woven shades for texture and a cornice board on top, again trimmed with a flat tape.

lcmorse02 ALL - Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions! I made a very productive visit to Home Goods this weekend and purchased a rug, club chair and pillows as part A of this project. I chose a rusty orange as the accent color and am planning on adding fabric shades thanks to your suggestions. @decoenthusiaste, I ADORE the drapes in the modern classic family room photo and have found them at Calico Corners. Here's a photo of part A. The club chair is a mini version geometric print of the rug. After this was taken, we also moved the end table to the left of the fireplace with the tall gold lamp and plant. It's super cozy and a million times better already.... Regarding panels/shades, I'd love any additional feedback! I think I would like something with a white/cream background and sage design (just like the Calico fabric). Thanks again houzzers!!
