Narrow, long living room-how to best fit space
When you walk into our house, you walk into a room that is filled with light with 8 big windows spanning along the back of the house across the living room and what will be our kitchen after our remodel. However we are not sure how to utilize the space in our narrow, long living room. Our living room is 12'6" wide by 19'6" long with the fireplace coming out 22" on the far right side (or towards the back). Because the room is narrow and the fireplace is way off center in the room, we are not sure how to accommodate this space. Help please!

decoenthusiaste You haven't posted enough well-lit pics here to help us much. Can we see all the walls? Thanks.

the essentials inside Hi rech1017! Beautiful home though the layout does look a bit tricky.

A few questions for you, if you don't mind:

-When you remodel the kitchen, can you take out the wall on the right w/the console table or is that a load-bearing wall?

-How much space is between the back of the couch and your beautiful windows?

-When you walk in the front door what is to the left?

-How much time is spent in this room?

Diane Griffett We had the same problem as you. What we did was to actually put up a wall between the entry and the living room. Gave it two defined spaces. I then had a living room that was no longer floating in the middle of the room, it was anchored against a wall. My entry got its own defined space. I was really surprised how much "bigger" the living room area felt went it was actually smaller and more square.

rech1017 Here are a few more pics. Hopefully the lighting is better. Lyvonne, thanks for your questions to help me. We have thought about removing the wall with the console table, but our concern is I don't want to feel as though you walk into the house and right into the kitchen. Our contractor said it not a load bearing wall. We are open to suggestions, so please any thoughts and suggestions! There is about 3 feet behind the couch to the windows, it is our walkway between the back door and back stairs and the rest of the 1st floor. When you walk in the front door, we have a half bath and our family room is through the opening. Once the kitchen renovation is complete, we see the living room as a spot where we will be a lot as the kitchen will open up into the living room-we hope a great, cozy place to be by the fire without a tv! Thanks again for your help.

Diane Griffett It is not the greatest angle because I am taking the photo from the living room. You can see how we added the dividing walls. We choose to put doors in to completely close off the entry. Give me a chance to find a living room shot.
