Can I install a farmhouse sink? Need to hear from someone who has!
I am in love with the look of a farmhouse sink and found Ikea has a very reasonably priced double basin version that seems almost perfect...almost. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99822037/

Dilemma: The product is made for a 36" cabinet and I think mine are a bit shy of that. The sink has an overhang that looks to me to be about 1" on either side. If the 36" includes this and I only need a cutout of 35" or less I believe the sink will fit. a 36" cavity would put the sink just into the drawers on either side and I am not planning to replace the cabinets.

Has anyone installed a similar product and found the cutout needed to be less than 36” (or whatever the dimensions of a similar sink)?

I really don’t think I can afford any other farm sink, so if this one won’t work it will crush my dreams. :-(

Thanks for any comments!

Madeline Maybe you could start by phoning Ikea and asking them that question: does the 36" include the rim, or overhang? I would think not but check to make sure. Also your present sink looks smaller than the cabinet beneath it. Have you measured your cabinet beneath from "wall to wall" to get an accurate measurement? Just a few of the first questions that came to mind but I remember way back when I was getting ready to replace a kitchen I made many many measuring mistakes, since that was not my regular job! There are tons of "farm sinks" on the market, just keep searching the internet, I can't believe Ikea has the only one that would work for you. Good luck to you. madeline

Ironwood Builders The Ikea sink is a good deal, yes. It takes all of 36" and then some. A Porcher fireclay is a better fit for your cabinet or maybe a Shaws...check out this link to alternatives. And please...be patient. We are all doing this out of a desire to help...but it is Sunday and the free advise isn't flowing as fast....the designers need some down time too.http://www.vintagetub.com/asp/feature_item.asp?cat=80&subcat=60&utm_id=IDA64&s_kwcid=TC|13590|fireclay%20farm%20sink||S|p|11676143049&gclid=CO_SoPiGvrUCFU1yQgod3V8AKQ

cwalbrun19 Thanks for the advice. I will check with Ikea but just thought someone might have had a similar problem. I'm sure there are other sinks out there that would fit but I can't justify a $600 sink (or more) right now. There are a few other sinks for less out there but the reviews were pretty bad. If this one won't work, I'll keep an eye out for sales, etc that might make it doable, but it would have to be a pretty darn good sale! Thanks again.

Builtforone Are you changing the countertop? im a carpenter and we did the cut out in one kitchen, is not a big deal you can get that sink, just have somebody cut your cabinets to make it fit.

cwalbrun19 The countertop will be changed at some point. I haven't figured out yet if I need to do the counters and sink at the same time, but have been planning to paint them and give them a water based poly coat as a temporary fix just to get rid of the green until we are ready to do it right. My boyfriend is quite handy, and thinks he can handle any cuts needed. The sink drives me crazy though (it's so small and doesn't hold water) so I would consider doing that sooner rather than later.

Linda We inherited one of those IKEA sinks in our latest project house. As I remember, the sink goes into a 36 inch cabinet with the flat part of the underneath side resting on the cabinet sides. Then, the front of the sink sits on a cross bar mounted inside the cabinet. Now, as I recall, the top of the sink is slightly wider than the 36 inch portion by about a half inch or less on each side. In that kitchen, the owners had put pieces of wood on the cabinet sides to make the sink sit higher so that it would overlap the countertop beside it. They did it as an overmount sink which appeared to rest on the countertops on each side. That solution should work for you, if you don't object to having the sink atop your counters. Or, if you're getting the counters replaced also, just build up the top of the cabinets so the new countertop sits even with the sink

The Porcher sink is considerably narrow than 36" and would certainly fit in a 36 inch cabinet. I have one of those in my kitchen - but, purchased from my local ReStore for $40. So, there are other ways than just IKEA - keep an eye out at ReStore, salvage yards, Craigslist, and demo sales.

evelyn Go to the IKEA website and find your sink. Scroll down a little and there will be a link to assembly instructions in PDF format. The instructions assume you are installing the sink in an IKEA cabinet, but you should be able to see if this will work in your cabinet.
