Need help for my family room
I need help trying to decide how to configure my family room and what type of extra seating to put in here. I am open to any ideas. (The room is open to the foyer and kitchen.) The big chair in the corner can be moved to another room, but the couch will stay. The coffee table is definitely being replaced, but I'm not sure with what. We'd like to keep the armoire for now, (but are open to suggestions). Right now our focus is on seating (do we want a leather loveseat to match sofa or two chairs of a lighter color?).

reed5 I would try to float the sofa in front of your fireplace. On the side where your sofa is now you could fit 2 chairs. Good Luck

dlapollo paint walls decorator white
and make accent wall where the fireplace is
Benjamin Moore - Stone
take down the picture over fireplace; better to have nothing
and leave dark couch and dark furniture against the white walls
roll up area rug; the colors are dated with the rose and blue.
remove small objects like flower vase on coffee table and by the fireplace, and purchase large
accessories for this room.

Donna Colvin-Smith From the pictures, it looks like you need a really good rug pad, so your rug will quit bunching up. Look on www.homedecorators.com, they have good prices. Your pieces are all very dark, is this what you may be having some issues with? The leather sofa looks like a really beautiful quality piece, and if it was mine I would use down filled pillows, and a really nice throw to soften the look of the cold leather, maybe the colors from the rug? Speaking of the rug, can you get a bigger one, this would expand the area, looks like you have quite a bit of space to pull your couch back further and open up the area, also add a nice open sofa table behind the couch for additional staging opportunities. Since you have the fireplace, and the huge TV cabinet competing for a focal point, making the area bigger might help. Get a "chunky" coffee table, the one you have currently gets lost floating in the center of your room. Lose the big trees, are these fake? They seem very contemporary, and your decor is very traditional. I would paint the walls a richer color, this would really make the white woodwork and gorgeous mantle POP! and then add some more art on the walls surrounding the TV cabinet. You have a wonderful room to work with, it just needs a bit of tweaking!

beckyswerd Thanks for the ideas. We are definitely getting a new coffee table, but does anyone have suggestions on additional seating? We need at least one more piece and aren't sure whether to get another leather piece such as a loveseat to match the sofa, or another chair or two (cloth)? Thanks!

Leya Matalas Turn the carpet horizontal. Move sofa facing F/P. Behind the sofa place a sofa table. On this table you can put small lamps for reading or a few nice select stand up framed photos. You have now cleared that space. in front of the archway. To add more seating and create a conversation area, add 2 chairs( The colour of the center of your carpet facing armoire separate them with an end table- ( could match the new sofa armoire table behind sofa) Also- One glaring issue where the 2 gorgeous windows you have, flank the F/P.> Buy 1 nice rods. Mount then high to the ceiling as you can. Find some nice linen-look neutral drapes- (Add a black border to the bottom to pick up the border in your carpet) Some oversized neutral updated cushions in a light linen fabric.. would lighten the look. The frame on the F/P picture is wrong. - It needs a lighter frame. Lose the vase and candle holders on the F/P. Keep it simple- less clutter. Have fun shopping.

rawketgrl Get the love seat and chair with ottoman to match your couch. Couch table behind the couch, love seat facing fireplace, chair with ottoman where the wing back chair is, a cozy throw on the chair and a small round table next to it with a lamp and a book. Rectangular coffee table that you like in front of couch. Scoot rug closer to fireplace.Toss 2 large pillows on the floor in front of the coffee table. Nice and cozy. Beautiful space.

carolins What a lovely room. Nice fireplace.
I'd go for two comfortable chairs. Perhaps something like this? http://www.potterybarn.com/products/brooklyn-nailhead-upholstered-armchair/?pkey=coccasional-chairs

Also, it will give the room a more modern feel if you remove the rug.

cjohnston You will have a lot more flexibility if you purchase 2 chairs, rather than a loveseat. Also, it looks like you have wall-to-wall carpet in this room, so I suggest removing the area rug and defining the space with a larger coffee table and other furniture. What do you think about adding curtains?
