Need HELP with living room
Looking for help trying to figure out where to put tv and sitting area. Also, trying to bring in alot of color with accents. I would like to put curtains over doors that are on side of fireplace. This room needs a lot of help.

decoenthusiaste We need to see more pictures of the other half of the room, the doors at the FP and the windows to be of any assistance. More pics = more input from Houzzers. Please post here and not on a new post.

Barbara Griffith Designs Move the sofa to where the chair is now, move the chair and add another with a table between where the sofa is now.Really need a large lighter, colorful, patterned rug for starters. Feet off furniture should be on the rug. I would also paint my walls & ceiling a darker shade because of all the dark furniture and floor. Use the colors in the new rug to add pillows to the sofa, bring the coffee table closer to the sofa, and add glass or light colored tables & lamps. One really large piece of colorful art over the fireplace, and art on other walls as well. Maybe a piece of iron metal art horizontal over the TV set and art on the sides.

inglewoodway Thinking we will be getting a sofa that is a lot lighter color, that might help out with all the dark brown.

decoenthusiaste Barbara has nailed the direction you should go. Lighter furnishings are a must for this space. Are the doors by the FP the only source of natural light? If so, that would be my focus - lamps, floor lamps and possibly a nice drum chandy instead of the fan.I would not cover the two door windows. Use pillows, throws and a fabric upholstered accent chair to get color and softness in the room. You can't afford to lose any light. With your large openings you might consider a drape for them. This is typical in drafty European homes, but with bills starting to go out the roof, it might be adaptable to American homes and can be a new source of decor.

inglewoodway Yes the doors on side of fp are the only source of light in the room will be painting all the dark brown furniture a lighter color with some chalk paint and lightly destress it.So should I put tv above fireplace or would it be too high because of high mantel.

decoenthusiaste We keep encouraging Houzz to post a tutorial with all the details for installing TV over FP, but none yet. There must be some ratio of mantel height to seating distance to figure it out, but I don't know it.
I do know some installers are tilting the TV forward for ease of viewing. It certainly eliminates the dilemma of multiple focal points. Some say heat can be a problem. That is a question for the TV manufacturer I think. Design and decor wise, if the TV is larger than 75% of the mantel's width, it will be to large, and I think that is the case with yours. You'd be better off with a piece of art over the FP.

decoenthusiaste Forgot - I would not cover the two windows since that is all your natural light. For fabric softness and warmth use pillows, throws, a fabric upholstered accent chair or two. In drafty European homes you often find drapes at big openings like you have between the rooms. With utility costs rising, I think this idea will take off here soon, so consider it.

Barbara Griffith Designs I think putting the TV over the fireplace is too high and you would be facing light coming in from the windows. Try putting a nice framed round mirror over the fireplace and leave the TV on the current wall.
