Living room
I could use help with wall decor for cathedral ceiling in my living room. The paint color is currently a butter yellow and we are considering a change so ideas are welcome.

decoenthusiaste Perhaps a lighter blue-gray than your sofa and then accents of yellow. Pics are not lit well enough to make a more specific suggestion.

Dytecture It's fine to leave the upper wall surfaces blank, but a larger piece of art above the sofa and something that balances out the chest unit would be ideal.

tennischicky So I should put something larger on the other side of the sofa to balance the chest? I agree my photo is poor and maybe makes things appear a bit more out of scale than they really are. Thanks for the input.

tennisanyone Take a picture of the whole space.

tennischicky Another view...

tennisanyone I am not getting the feeling of the whole space with these pictures. Do you have a staircase somewhere? The chest and the picture look out of balance. Something seems off to me but I can't get the whole room. You have the tv above the fireplace. Do you like it there?

viennalopez Maybe a color like your chair?

tennisanyone If you stood at the fireplace and took a picture that would be great. Have you ever had the couch facing the tv?

decoenthusiaste We haven't seen all four walls in your space yet, only two. The chest seems out of place unless it could serve as a counter balance to the FP. Seems maybe there is a staircase opposite the FP. We need to see 360 to really dig in and help, but my first impression is that the rug needs to be turned 180, the sofa needs to sit on it facing the FP. The brown lounger should go where the sofa is now. The chest might do better on one of the two walls we haven't seen yet.

tennischicky Okay, this will show you a little more of the space. It's an open floor plan and this room is not really that big but we tend to use it a lot for convenience. I'm working with pieces I have for now and have arranged the furniture in about every way possible and this arrangement gives us the most room because there are walk through areas on each side of the room. But maybe some of you with more experience can tell me what's best. And, no, I don't particularly care for the tv over the fireplace but that's where its wired for a tv and as I said, we end up here due to convenience. We have an upstairs bonus room with a large tv that doesn't get as much use as this room! Feel free to comment on items that would look good in this room for any future purchases. Photos: #1 Toward front door; #2 from front door; #3 toward eat-in and hearth room. Thanks.

tennisanyone I think I would put the tv facing the fireplace as I said earlier and then move the two chairs on either side of the fireplace. Turn the rug too.

tennisanyone I would move the brown leather chair and ottoman where the brown chair is and put the beige chair in the other corner. Move the big brown pie ce down in the middle of the wall.

decoenthusiaste Thanks for posting these. I see there are really no other walls but an open kitchen and the stair wall. My suggestion stands as before, but I would replace the ladder shelf in the entry hall with the chest. The footprint is about the same and the chest is not working here, as it is throwing off symmetry and balance. It will give some weight to the entry. I would dispense with the ladder shelf entirely, as I think they are no longer so fashionable. I would also replace the little "chess piece" tables as they are too short and small. New non-matched side tables to place beside chairs and sofa should come just to or a tiny bit below the arms for convenient reach. You might invest in some beautiful bar stools since the bar/counter is part of the space. I think the stair well could use some art or a framed collection of photos.

tennischicky I had the chest at the entry but switched it with the shelf. I agree the shelf can go. My husband made it so I think that's why I've kept it. I also had the rug turned 180 with the sofa facing the tv. Maybe when I move the chest to the entry and don't try to fit the shelf into the arrangement, it will work for me. Agree with new side tables and bar stools. I've been searching for bar stools that I like. If you have a photo of a style you'd recommend, please post. Thanks much!

decoenthusiaste Would you want barstools similar to the dining chairs? How much do you want to spend on them.? I was thinking about texture and saw some seagrass ones. I think you need at least three of them. The leather parsons style is nice and formal enough for your space.

tennischicky No, I don't want the bar stools to match the dining chairs. I like the seagrass ones you posted. Casual, but nice. Z Gallerie has some similar to these but cost less. I'd like to see them in person so will check the store. Thanks!
