If I am about to start building a house, what is the best way to get the exposed brick look??
DIY thin brick veneers over the Sheetrock OR getting the building contractor to build a brick wall using full size bricks? What would be the step by step for each way? I want the wall around the fireplace b/w the windows to be exposed brick. This is a picture of what the area will look like after completion.

Dytecture Brick veneer would be a more economical route.

rinqreation Old dutch houses are mostly all brick. The newer ones more often are prefab concrete with a layer of insulation and a layer of brick on the outside. What type of framing/construction will be used in your house?
If some sort of prefab, I'd suggest veneers too.

soberg Veneer is fine as long as you use the real brick veneer, not the plastic stuff. Also, get your contractor's ideas on how to either trim the windows with the brick or incorporate the window trim into the design, to give it a purpose-built look.

Ironwood Builders Brick veneer is like tile, therefore more acceptable than real brick structurally on an interior. A thicker foundation and direct support under a full thickness brick is necessary. Caveat to using veneer is that it is thin, like tile, so reveals around windows and doors will look...thin. Double studding a wall on top of the exterior wall may be a less expensive route than the structural necessary to use full thickness brick and still get the look of a thick brick wall.

bmckee10 On this specific wall there will be wood and sheetrock used for the interior framing and vinyl siding for exterior framing

Ironwood Builders OK, so you need to use the brick veneer. With your windows shown as three way drywall wrap, you can return the veneer into the window and have look like the real thing.
