Long and narrow formal area
How can I decorate a narrow long formal living and dinning room? How can I make it to look brighter? How can bring things together ( living and dinning) in order to be cosy and modern same time?

decoenthusiaste You have quite a mix of furnishings, but the table and the red sofa look like keepers if you want to go modern, and the red can add"cozy." Good lighting is a great place to start. Look into getting two drum chandeliers and hang one of them about 36" or less above the table. Can you afford other furniture? Can you paint yourself?

radhannoo I would get rid of the busy rug...Ikea has some good neutral choices....if you do not have a budget for furniture, you can get matching covers for your couch and chairs to tie them together, you can also hang some photos or a painting on the wall...behind the two chairs...you also use some cushions for pops of colour. Finally, to brighten up the space, you could also paint an accent wall...the coffee table seems a little out of scale, you could paint it out and use it as a side table in one of the corners at the back...

Terri You can find a lot of furniture with "good bones" at flea markets and garage sales. Paint goes a long way to giving them a second life. If a new table is in your budget I think a smaller, round one would help take the edge off the narrow length of the room. Maybe one in a pale wood top with a few industrial chairs or if it's not in your budget you might try turning the table the other way to break up the length of the room. If the table is in good shape ditch the tablecloth, if not you can always paint or refinish the top.
The red couch is a fun color but I would change out the sofas for two "chair & a halfs."
Paint the walls a warmer color, but with a gray/brown tone. Change out the Southwestern rug for something in a more modern geometric and get a simple, clean lined square coffee table with a glass top. A candle grouping atop the coffee table will cozy up the living area.
Put two shorter rods on either side of the window, higher up to the ceiling and hang drapes that will frame the window without covering it. A book shelf on either side of the window could help with storage and to showcase books and a few collectibles or just a table on each side with a slim lamp to light the corners.
Balance the wall above the sofa with colorful artwork or a grouping of black and white photos in chunky same-colored frames. A fun, young modern approach would be to paint a large square on the wall opposite the sofa with chalkboard paint and then frame it out with molding spray painted metallic for your own "graffiti wall" where you and your guests can be creative.

simonabdo @terri: i have a budget for furniture , so i'll start from scratch: but I want to do it great! I couldnt luv more the idea of changing the dining table! I luv round, but the problem is that a gathering of my closest friends make 8...so will be ok a round table for minimum 8? or better a square one? and the dining area suppose to be in the same place or far back?

simonabdo @decoenthousiaste: You have right with the lighting! i have noticed that the room doesnt have light enough...that for I was thinking about drop ceiling, in such a way to bring the room together, divide it and increase light also...any suggestion?i like the colors that you have suggested....

simonabdo @radhannoo: great the idea of accent wall...some glamour to add! i luv that!...but all the wall or just something big size, like a pattern or painting?that's mean that the formal living room to stay there and not to switch it with the dining ....do you agree?

decoenthusiaste A drop ceiling will just make the room feel more closed up and therefore, darker. I find that painting the ceiling light with a satin finish gives some reflectivity and helps brighten a space Round tables for 8 are available and you may be able to use your chairs. If you can find the manufacturer's name on your table, they may have a round table that your chairs will work with.

radhannoo It looks like you have a natural separation between the two rooms with the structure that comes out of the wall...I would switch the rooms around with the dining table next to the sliding doors...and the living room where the dining room is....I would either paint or use wallpaper on one accent wall where the new living room would be...and use a big painting or mirror on one wall along the new dining room...the big painting should complement the accent wallpaper or painted wall...I personally like big graphic designs....

simonabdo @ radhannoo: BIG Graphic/ painting: sound like me!! one big painting on the side of the new dining area, will be great!

the living room :at the new location, to look for L-shape against the two walls that I have ? wallpaper in the front of the door or on the wall opposite of the sliding doors? ...

olldroo I am assuming your dining area is closest to your kitchen so would keep it that way. Love the round table decoenthusiaste found, it would make a huge difference to your area. If it is too big for the width of the room, you could get a smaller one that extends out into a oval for when all your friends visit. Round tables are so much nicer for conversation too. You have space for a longer buffet if you need storage, and look for artwork for above it or put a wall unit in for even more storage. If you didn't use a wall unit you could paint this wall in a feature colour. A nice pendant light over the table will add intimacy.

The round table will allow more space in your sitting area. Keep your window free to maximise light coming into the room and allow for more elegant drapes. I would have two lounges, one where you red lounge is now and one opposite but drawn into the room a little with a coffee table between. In the left hand corner you could have a single chair and reading lamp. If there is space another single chair could be placed backing the dining room, to create a U shaped sitting area.

Otherwise, you have a lot of space for artwork, and groupings look just as good as large pieces. There are a lot of ideas on Houzz for arranging artwork - eg.

radhannoo If you want the room to look wider, you can place the table parallel/horizontal to the sliding doors...then you can place a painting on the right or left wall above your credenza....if you're getting new furniture, you can get a sectional sofa that fits in a corner....and put the wallpaper on the wall across from where you're sitting on one wall only...so that you're looking at the accent wall...when you're sitting down...Home depot has some nice modern wallpaper

LizaJane I would remove the gold rug that you have in the living space. Declutter. Remove EVERYTHING out of both rooms that are not large pieces of furniture. It will give you a fresh start. I would add drapery panels to the window and hang as high up as possible to the ceiling. I would add some art that unifys the space. Also, you need a chandelier for above table.
