Want to update our railing to make it more modern
Tuttville
February 18, 2013 in Design Dilemma
We are thinking about changing this to a wooden railing and painting the spindles while and the railing expresso to match the cupboards in the kitchen or metals. Want to do it as economically as possible but want it to look nice. Will also change the tiles in the front hall area as well.

Espresso handrail and white spindles will look great / tie in existing white trim well.

Start by painting them a dark color..black would look great, add a lighter color (natural wood) heftier rail.

I don't think that the spindles have a contemporary look no matter what color you paint them I agree spend the money and change this to something you love and think through the choices you make so the floor and the stair rail work together and with the rest of the house. You will probably find that replacing it won't cost much more than having a handrail custom made.Make sure you know the rules in your area as to what kind of railing you can install.

I agree with Patricia Colwell, those spindles are incredibly dated looking. A thicker, more smoothed out handrail would look much nicer as well as providing a better grip. Check out these looks for some railing ideas; a similar treatment with the eco (left) would be lovely in your wonderful grey toned interior (from what I can see, anyway!) and is actually a quite economical look. A Metro stained dark with square muted pewter balusters (right) would also work. Simple balusters like these can really work wonders with the right newel post; geometric lines in darker tones would just look absolutely wonderful in contrast to your soft greys!
