Keitha Paint the door black. Install black iron railing if possible and install a wall of photos framed in simple black frames.

jfalkevitz In afraid black will darken the already narrow space. It looks nice in your sample pics however I don't know if it would work for my space.

jfalkevitz Also need some suggestions for stairs and landing area? I have 2 school aged girls who hang their belongings on that wall next to door.

mmklim Black for door and railing would be better if the walls were lighter and the brown carpet was gone. Otherwise all white would be more cohesive for door and rails. Also the runner would be a great pop if it were brighter. This area needs contrast and more light. On the landing area a small bench with cubbys underneath for shoes and such would be practical. Put decorative but sturdy hooks on the wall behind for back packs. Maybe a mirror too. A place for everything and everything in its place! Nice area with lots of potential!

mdamron61 I understand your concern about white. Not everything is white though. The walls are blue and the floor is brown with a colorful floor runner. A black light fixture would look awesome. Pictures with black frames would really pop.

mdamron61 I think a black door and railings would look better if the walls where white.

jfalkevitz The carpet is going and the railing is off and being prepped for black paint(going to look into powder coating for better durability) the landing is very small so I'm not sure a bench would be practical. Like the idea of a mirror too there.

jfalkevitz A white railing would be dirty in 15 minutes with the amount of traffic the area gets.

Christine Curry any chance you can remove that block part of the last step onto the stairs? I'd suggest a longer single step that extends out a few inches and curves into the wall.

Christine Curry kind of like this bottom stair, but without the hand rail/balustrade. Maybe put a thin cubby system on the long wall across from the closet for the kids to stow away their things... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/bargainhunter/9651587/Bargain-Hunter-Elegant-cutlery-and-spruced-up-staircases.html

jfalkevitz Love the look, however don't know if it would fit because of the doorway being right there.

Christine Curry it looks like you'd have to extend the landing board/step out a couple of inches so it would be flush with the wall.. then the last step (if descending down the stairs) would be longer to the right.

jfalkevitz Need an idea for this small space on stairway landing. Base trim is next but wanted to jazz it up a little. Ideas please??
