Master bathroom sinks: undermount vs. drop in
what is the current trend in bathroom sinks. we are redoing our master bath and can't decide to use undermount or drop in sinks. they both are appealing in their own ways. any designers (or anyone) want to weigh in? thanks

Norm Walters Construction Inc. Undermount it the most popular, what do you like about drop in's?

rockbrookway i think drop ins are a more traditional way to go and drop ins are more contemporary in style and give a cleaner line to showcase interesting countertops

Norm Walters Construction Inc. Drop ins were the only way to go with laminate countertops hence why there are so many of them. Believe it or not 80% of countertops in the U.S. are still laminate. They even have a way now to install an undermount sink in a laminate countertop now.. The undermount sink makes cleaning easier as everything is just pushed to the countertop cutout and into the sink rather than having a barrier caused by a top mount sink.

rockbrookway sorry, norm. i meant to say that "undermounts" were more contemporay and good to showcase nice countertops.

eagledzines I had heard of the undermount in laminate but never tried it. I just can't get past not believing that this isn't a good plan, with a particle board base.

Norm Walters Construction Inc. eagledzines, I haven't done it but know fabricators that have with good success. The sinks are Karran. Their original sink for undermounting to laminate was an acrylic solid surface sink. Now they have a stainless steel sink with an acrylic solid surface edge at the rim.

eagledzines They've been trying to sell this idea for over ten years now. One guy I knew used it all the time but I was waiting for some time to go by to see the results come in. I never knew enough people that did it to really get a good grip on any reviews. I stood behind my warranty and was not fond of the idea of warrantying it to my customers. I don't know...maybe if some guys are selling it still, there's some merit.

Norm Walters Construction Inc. The "edge" sink is newer, i saw it at a trade show a couple of years ago. The plywood base, which is should be, is 1-1/4' from the edge of the laminate. I figured if there is discussion on here about painting cabinets with latex paint......................................

eagledzines Keeping the base away from the laminate makes sense.

You lost me on the discussion on painting cabinets with latex?

Norm Walters Construction Inc. I was just being sarcastic about price points, a little humor injected .
