Are these chairs cool?!
I've been looking for 2 neutral chairs for my living room... I like MCM style... are these cool? Or do they remind you of your grandma's house, in a bad way? $119 a piece at a local furniture consignment store.

Soring Interiors I think you can get cooler Chairs . Are these at a consignment shop? Look some more.

njmomma I like them! What a great price! They can work for MCM.
kris10c I agree with both! haha. I've just been looking for so looooooong!
Stacey Rushing Buy them. For the price I think they are Great!!!! Just take off the arm covers...they scream grandma. The lines are classic and clean and they look to be in great shape :)
Jayme Hobbs They are kinda cool..what other furniture do you have?
mandek They sit low. Can you change the legs your seating will be different heights
3 months ago · ·
wyndyacre Good buy for nice retro chairs if they are clean and comfortable! Remove the arm covers, add some cushions that tie in with other colours in your room. If you buy both, bargain on the price! Bet they would take $175-200 for the pair. :-)
olldbobbi Oh yes! Replace the arm covers with doilies! Just kidding. Did you sit in them, are they comfortable? They look clean but I worry about the cushions, do they sink in too much?

kris10c Jayme, I have the Ikea Klippan couch, and that's it- small space, first house, decorating from scratch (thought it would be awesome, proving to be harder than I thought!) Have been looking at Target slipper chairs but these excite me more than any of those.
olldbobbi If you love them, buy them.
kris10c Haven't looked at them in person yet, due to the current Snowpocolypse we are enduring in the midwest!
Jayme Hobbs May work out fine for you. Do u have room for both chairs? What color is your sofa?
kris10c As SNL Miley Cyrus would say, I think they're "Pretty Cool". Maybe seeing them in person will help. I will take a throw and pillow with me.
kris10c I have room. Sofa is the "natural linen".
Mandy I have to just say the "wings" on these are bugging me. Maybe I'm the odd man out, but if they were set back a bit I would be all over them.
judyg Great price as long as the fabric is not "Amtrack" (Northeast Corridor). What style is your sofa?
kris10c Coordinate or no?

libradesigneye Kris, For the price, go for it - what is throwing you off is the seams on the reupholstery - if they had done baseball seams on those arms you would be cheering full throat. It isn't a big deal - someday you can afford to have them recovered and for now they are 90% (if they feel good to sit in, and they smell good, etc.)

I think another cool solution was touched on above - maybe just change the legs out to some of IKEA's brushed silver jobs to match your Klippan, and voila, instant cool. (For purists, I don't dislike the legs . . ) but since Mr. Klipp has the silver ones, and ikea sells them, that might be the entrance point for cool. Colors look ideal together - and ps I have some ikea and if you don't know about BEMZ you want to - I rely on them to make my ikea cooler. google them for aftermarket ikea slipcovers in nicer fabrics and cool prints. (and no, i don't work for them)

Jayme Hobbs They look pretty similar in color..

PYRAMID DESIGN GROUP if you are looking for fun new vintage go to thrivefurniture.com their chairs are much more fun (than the thrift shop ones you show) and they have a fairly good fabric / color selection --american made

kris10c I wish I could, PDG! I will shop there when I marry rich. ;)

bumbles12 My experience is to buy something you really love even if you have to wait awhile to get it. Don't go for something because the price is right.

Stacey Rushing So I was just looking at overstock.com They have several chairs in the 100-200 dollar range and they are brand new. If these don't sit well you might want to consider something like this. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Christopher-Knight-Home-Darvis-Grey-Recliner-Club-Chair/6843248/product.html
3 months ago ·
carolins I think they are pretty cool. Most important thing is... are they comfortable? The chair from Overstock suggested above isn't cool at all, but they do have some MCM style chairs that look very stylish. In fact, so stylish that suddenly comfort isn't the most important thing anymore ;-)

Juniper River Home Design I'm not one for criticism but it's just my opinion that you can do better than these chairs. I realize that retro can go "cool" or "grandma" really quickly. This one hits "grandma & grandpa"! Keep going and post again your other finds.
Or check out this favorite - similar but different - http://www.crateandbarrel.com/petrie-chair/s688498
3 months ago · ·
wildgeese These chairs will cost you $200. Two from Crate and Barrel will cost you $2,000.00. For $200 you can't go wrong (if you have buyers remorse next year you can switch and you didn't spend that much). You should get them. They look like they are in perfect condition. Hey maybe Grandma had them covered in plastic up until now, so you lucked out!!!! I'd get them, before someone else does. They will look great with a couple of pillows.
PS: All the negative comments about the arm covers are making me feel very old right now. I feel like running (sprinting) into my living room and ripping off the arm covers from the new chairs I just got. I have 3 children and don't trust their little fingers, so I'm going to resist removing them and stick with the grandma look for a while - unless I cover them with plastic!!!.

Interiors International, Inc. Cool, for a MCM look I think they will work fine.
wyndyacre I think it's pretty refreshing to see someone on this site, living in the "real" world and considering buying used, vintage furniture that can be made to be stylish, instead of the posts we so often see about exhorbitantly priced, $400 cushions and $4000 coffee tables! Not everyone has the same income to work with and it's a little unrealistic to suggest $2000 chairs to someone who is looking at used $200 chairs. I commend kris10c on her eye and her thriftyness!
ltllefty I love them. I've been looking for a chair like that, with no luck.
kris10c All your advice is great, this is helping me a lot!! Thank you so much.
befff I wanted to add that the quality of these chairs will be thirty times that of newer similarly priced (even not so similarly priced) chairs on overstock.com. Also, they have character and nice lines.
wildgeese These may have cost a lot more originally. Consignment shops are great for finding custom furniture at a fraction of the cost. Usually it is hard to find something so neutral in color at consignment shops, so I think you lucked out with these 2 chairs.

SPACIALISTS Hi kris10c,

They are cool! it just depends on how they will relate to the rest of the furniture in your Living room.
Barbara Griffith Designs I'd buy them..they are basic..you can do whatever you want in your room for punch.
apple_pie_order Yes, they are grandma's. But so is everything vintage.

Sit on them for 20 minutes. Flip them over and take a look at the understructure. If the springs are in good condition, fine. If they've been replaced by plywood and some nails, forget it.

They've been reupholstered (and not very well), and they could be upholstered again for several hundred dollars each. The armcovers add to the period charm (or lack thereof, depending on your point of view).
Kevin Retired Decorator I think the lines of the chairs are great. Remove the arm caps and add some new lumbar pillows for a updated look. I would love to see the whole room. I'm hoping your sofa in linen is much lighter than the chairs. You do need some contrast in color. Kevin

Dawn Nakaya_delk I think those are perfect. See the couch I used in this design? http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/644037_10151223150685630_1411145230_n.jpg

Dawn Nakaya_delk Sorry this is on my facebook. Here it is.
kris10c Kevin, hadn't thought to use lumbar pillows. Thanks! I love that couch, Dawn! There was nothing in my price range in my area... or STATE for that matter... with clean lines like that, but someone who moved here from Alaska had the Klippan, so I snatched it up!
concordhome I think you should buy them. The price is great. If the are well made you can invest in having them covered later. Do you watch Sarah Richard on HGTV? She is always recovering chairs or painting furniture and turning them into something really special.
Dawn Nakaya_delk I was just trying to show you that the chairs would work great in a contemporary setting. I love them. My couch is new, but was made in the style you found for such a great price. buy them!
Jayme Hobbs Then show us how they look!!

kris10c Bought them!! For... drumroll please... $190 for the pair! Ridiculous. They were in fact in good shape! Can't wait to get them in my space, Will post a pic as soon as I get them.
judyg kris…yeah! I think you hit the jackpot. Please post.

Kevin Retired Decorator $48. savings Yea !!! Now you can get those lumbar pillows and $ left over. How cool is that!
lowprofile If you want to make them cooler, put new feet under the chairs, more boxy square ones, in my eyes it makes them more modern. Good buy I would bought them.
yvonnecmartin I agree with celebrating someone who is buying vintage furniture. It saves it from the landfill and saves the purchases some money in the process. Although not all purchases are so frugal, the ability to reupholster in quality fabric of one's own choice is wonderful.

Before you think of lumbar pillows, make sure that they will add to the comfort. If you don't do pillows, a throw can add color. If the colors don't exactly compliment the sofa, consider a print for pillows that incorporates both the colors of the couch and the chairs, perhaps with an accent color as well.

My own taste is MCM, so I appreciate chairs that don't have huge arms and that actually have legs. This is so nice in a smaller space but works well in a large space also.

wyndyacre Way to go Kris! Looking forward to seeing them in your home!

carolins Congratulations! Great purchase!

kris10c Uh ohhhhh.... look what I bought off Craigslist for $35 today!!!! I don't even know if it's ever been sat on. It's perfect. And amazing. The chairs go perfectly but it's not a good enough mix of old and new so I'm gonna have to play with it! Sorry I haven't posted a pic of the chairs... house isn't super styled yet and I want it to be a good pic!

LB Interiors Great purchases, chairs and sofa. Can't wait to see the room. I love buying from craigslist.

Nancy Walton Kris, you're better off buying the chairs from the consignment store--they're made better than any chairs you'll find in today's market, even the "high end" market. When you can afford to reupholster them later, the upholsterer can restyle them to update the look, i.e. take off the wings, if you want.

If you pick up these chairs compared to new chairs from C&B, you will know what I mean when I say they are made better, they will be be heavier, due to hardwood frames instead of plywood.

carolins That sofa is absolutely fabulous! That fabric is so cool. Terrific find. We don't care that your room isn't styled (yet). Would love to see the chairs with the sofa. You can do 'before and after styling' pics :-)

njmomma The chairs and the sofa are going to look fabulous together! Please start posting pics. So we can see the room as it progresses.
