Need help with paint color.
My cottage home has an open floor plan--the kitchen flows into the dining nook and both are open to the den. The kitchen backsplash is a deep yellow, the dining nook is a terracotta orange. Now we're creating a built in cabinet/media center for the den and would like to paint the wall it sits against so we can see the color behind the open shelves. We're having the worst time choosing the right color. The furniture is a dark, red brown leather (almost like cordovan) that we don't want to change. Any suggestions?

olldbobbi How about going between the yellow and the terracotta orange, and try yellow ochre?

decoenthusiaste Try Sherwin Williams 6342 Spicy Hue for a darker shade. SW 6902 Decisive Yellow might pick up on your kitchen color. Can't load the yellow, but check at the SW site.

olldbobbi There are those of us who say it's better to keep with a consistent color scheme in an open floor plan, but I disagree. I think that teal is beautiful! If you decide to go with it, just bring some teal items into the other rooms.

ASVInteriors In the March issue of House Beautiful there is a whole section dedicated to choosing colours for adjacent rooms... Unfortunately it is not available online (yet)

aloman Thanks, bobbi. In fact, thanks everyone who gave me ideas. Still unclear where we're going, but this gives us something to think about.

Design & Decor By Shelley Hello Aloman, Several blue colours will co-ordinate nicely with the terra-cotta colour since they are complimentary colours, (directly opposite on the colour wheel). Lighter shades with blue such as turquoise or teal will work nicely and give your space a mediterranean feel if that is the style you want.
Pick up a few paint chips including the kokopelli teal and see what works best with your terra-cotta.

aloman thank you, Shelley. I'll do that. I've been looking at Ben Moore's millsprings blue (http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/millspringsblue) which is a more gray tealish blue. I think I'll try a few more before deciding.
