Is a white kitchen a true classic?
My husband and I are having a consultation with a kitchen design professional tomorrow! I am beyond excited! We have waited a LONG time to remodel our medium oak, 1990's, Formica countertop, sheet vinyl clad space. I love a kitchen with white cabinets, my husband likes cherry. My plan is to have white cabinets with a cherry island. I have always thought of white cabinetry as a quintessential classic. However, lately I have been reading that white kitchens are almost "out" of style. What is your opinion? Has the white kitchen been overdone? Will a white kitchen date my remodel? Thank you for your thoughts!

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design White kitchens to me are classic, having been around as long as kitchen cabinets have been. One of the reasons for the surge in popularity in the last decade has been an increased popularity of hardwood flooring in the kitchen. In order to have a contrast, the white cabinet gained a strong following. During the same period, we have seen a move to darker floor tile and darker carpeting, again with the result that for contrast, white cabinets proved a great solution.

I don't know where the next trend will take us, but I do know that the white cabinet will endure as a classic. Mixing in a cherry island sounds ideal to give you an interesting combo in your new kitchen.

Vivian Rase I don't believe white will ever go out of style. It is bright and cheerful and white just looks clean...a must for a kitchen. As for the cherry, I like it left natural and not stained. Dark cherry has definitely gone out of style in my area.

feeny I don't think that white kitchens will ever go out of style, though I suspect some of the more ornate white cabinetry styles with raised panels and heavy glazes might. If you stick with something simple and classic like Shaker doors, I think your white kitchen will be more timeless. A friend of ours redid a kitchen recently with a combination of white shaker cabinetry and natural (unstained) cherry cabinetry. She put white granite counters with the cherry cabinets and cherry counters with the white cabinets. The effect of this combination is striking.
