Engrav's Decorating The light fixture fights against the modern look you are after. What color is your area rug and what accent or colors do you have in the adjoining room or rooms?
collettec Do you have a faux paint treatment on the walls and ceiling? I would go with a gray that worked with the rug, the drapes and the art. Maybe even a silver gray. I would paint both the walls and the ceiling a solid color. You might consider just painting the interior part of the ceiling within the interior center molding the gray and leave the exterior part of the ceiling white to brighten the room and still accent the ceiling molding.
vitruvian02 Agree with changing the light fixture. The current one works well for a Tuscan/Old World look. I would paint above the molding a soft grey like Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. It will work well with the brown furniture and completely change the look. You can find that color on Pinterest. Have fun!
Suzan J Designs - Decorating Den Interiors Agree - soft gray/beige on the upper walls, change the light fixture, reupholster chairs (if budget allows) with a soft linen - could be gray, beige, black - depending on how dramatic you want it to look. If you can't reupholster the whole chair, keep the leather on the seat backs and reupholster the seats only (fairly easy diy). Try to find a fabric, preferably a pattern, with gray, beige, brown and maybe orange to bring a pop in. This fabric would tie in the rug, draperies and leather chair backs. Light fixture should not be as heavy as the current one. Lamps look good. Go back to first rug - second one looks too much like drapery fabric. Abstract piece of art with a pop of color. You could paint the ceiling the darker gray that's in the rug; that would add some visual interest.
kwhite014 Thank you so much for your ideas, I completely agree with changing the light fixture. I changed so much throughout my home that I have to wait for the light. I will post pictures when it is done.
Suzan J Designs - Decorating Den Interiors Yes - I would paint both parts of the ceiling a gray that's a couple shades darker than the wall color. Leave the trim white. Even changing the paint will have a dramatic effect, so don't feel you have to wait to paint until you can change the light fixture. Doing it in stages gives you an idea of what the final project will look like when it's done, and makes you feel like you've made some headway. It'll look awesome! Definitely post pics when it's done!
