Need Help Improving the Curb Appeal - Hi Ranch
Any suggestions on how to improve the curb appeal of our house? Keep in my that we had a really dry summer and the grass should be greener, lol.
Thank you

Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design Add another pair of columns so that you will have two pair on either side of the entry. Repaint the front door in a classical color (Chinese Red, Black, Charcoal Gray. Repaint the garage doors too. In addition to the lanterns, hang a large scale lantern from the overhang above the door. A very Monticello like detail is to hang the new lantern on chain and add leads using cable, from the lantern to your columns which keeps it from swinging when its windy. This also adds some visual interest. Last, the foot path looks anemic. bring it closer to the road by about 10-12 feet and then it can become an "L" shaped path. You can add if you like, a post light at the driveway. A pair of black iron Urns about 30"tall flanking the front door filled with red geraniums. The house is beautiful, Georgian, and stately.
Last comment is......if you get to relandscaping, add a small grove of white birch at the right hand side of the house, cut back the bushes against the house, and then add another small group of white birch at the left front of the lot.

boysaboys That is a beautiful home. Do you really need that massive lawn? Is there another big space out the back for kids to play? Def a few trees - not sure what does well in your area. I would keep the center space a lawn but smaller and add a large wide boarder on three sides with shrubs, trees, flowers etc - where the pathway is to the front door would not have a boarder so you can see into the garden.

ellecaliente The home is lovely! The home desperately needs a nicely defined footpath to the driveway or street. With that you can add some lovely shrubbery and definitely need some flowers and/or flowering trees/bushes. I completely agree with Jeffrey Brooks' comments!

s0864513 Thank you very much for the suggestions. One question, are you sure I should paint the garage doors? I've heard it gives attention to them.

Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design They're a large part of the picture so what ever color they become they can't be eliminated. Paint them or not, either way the remaining recommendations will work for you. You can always come back to them once the rest is in place.

Sweet Caroline Garden Design It seems that many are in agreement that landscaping would do a great deal for your home. As it is I don't see a lot wrong with it but if your roof ever needs replacing I think a darker color would be great. Here's a doodle of what I think would be a good landscape . Blue or white hydrangeas or azaleas along the foundation, annuals and perennials in front of them. A nice wide paved walkway to the garage area or if you don't use that front entrance make it to the street. An evergreen groundcover instead of lawn would also be great.

AMN Your garage doors will not turn into a focal point if you paint them a color that is somewhat darker than the body of the house.

s0864513 Thank you for all the great suggestions and help. If I paint the doors would I also need to paint the pillars or would I leave them white?

Melissa Meverden I think if you paint the door, you should leave the pillars white.

Pamela Bateman Garden Design Where are you located or what is your climate zone? It would be nice to have some flowering trees or shrubs. Do you like to garden? You have lots of room for flower beds.

s0864513 I'm in a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. The house sits on an acre lot and I'm finding it difficul to build flower beds that don't look out of place or 'lonely'.

msamassanari grass is not looking good in picture...don't be scared to make very large planters...less grass to take care of! Look in your neighborhood to see what grows well and you like....more formal/color etc plant tree or trees in planter then smaller bushes and grasses or flowers...make sure you have enough leaves/color that will extend through winter. Landscaping will add tremendously to your curb appeal. Path should be a curved shape breaking up front yard leading to door

msamassanari dark stately colored front door as suggested above good idea. also agree re garage doors if you paint them close to house color will blend in more with house not stand out

boysaboys The front entrance is great. Very stately. I like the pillars the way they are. And, I would do a path that leads straight to your front door. Landscaping on either side and around. You don't need all that lawn, but you do need plants that are drought tolarant, that work in your area etc. Forget the garage doors for now, work on the very front of the house. Nice home !
