Mid-century modern great room needs some help
We're renovating, changing walls and door placements but the basic footprint will be the same. Any thoughts on a good wall colour that won't clash with this bossy floor (too expensive to pull up and I don't mind it, in truth). The colour would have to continue from the front door to the back of the house and frame an ocean view.

Kaplan Architects, AIA It might be interesting to paint the walls white to match the couches and dining chairs. That might give the space an even more contemporary feel and make it seem even more light filled. Then you could accents of color judiciously.

A Kitchen That Works LLC I would concur with Kaplan Architects.

apple_pie_order Kaplan Architects' suggestion would make for a stunning space. Much more sophisticated than going with a pinky peach color from the floors.

lefty47 HI -- Yes I totaly agree with Kaplan -- WHITE for the whole room ,-ceiling ,walls all the same . Get some sample cards to find the right white against your sofa ,- from Benjamin Moore paints , there is Cloud White - Decorators White , Ultra White , just so many . Then your Art and accessories will add the color and interest , Also include some beachy weathered /drift wood pieces in furniture and decor . All white is making a huge comeback with modern and beach interiors .

Barbara Griffith Designs White walls will not highlight your sofa, which,by the way, is wonderful. White with white, to me, one will always look dull or dirty..or as the term goes "close but no cigar". I would use a vary pale blue/gray SW 6224 - Mountain Air. It will look good with everything in your home including your floor and it is perfect with an ocean view.

Here is the color link http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6224-mountain-air/

I say the floor is just fine..ignore it and treat it as if it were a solid..I mean add a large colorful patterned rug in the seating area (consider using colors from the 2 great pictures in the dining area). Put the furniture on the rug..the current is too small and to pale, and in using the colors in the floor on this rug you currently have in there, you just highlight the floor. If the rug is the focus, bright & colorful, the floor fades away. Consider another rug under the table & chairs..large maybe lighter in color and less busy to not take away from the 2 pictures.

I see a drapery on a window/door area. I would replace them with something that goes above the window over the door. The two small chairs are really nice, put put a larger bulkier (to the floor) table between them. Then a tall large statement lamp on it.

akjones Thanks everyone, I think we're ready to make a decision. I take Kaplan's point that white walls and ceiling would make for a great modern space and that's where I'm leaning, but this is a rental house and I'm concerned it will look dingy before too long. I do really like the Griffith design colour suggestion, perhaps when we're there next month we'll try it out on a wall and see if it works. I'll keep you all tip to date as to how the project is progressing, the big dig starts in August. Wish me luck. I'll take any and all suggestions as to how to turn this lovely beach home into a mid century marvel.

akjones Hey spacialists! That's a really cool paint app you have. Is there anyway to put sherwin Williams "mountain mist" on thief walls?

SPACIALISTS Hi akjones, This is a service we offer our clients. There are other sites that are free that offer similar options. Here is the Mountain Mist color.
