Tiny home office, rug color?
I have a 10x10 home office with one sunny window. The walls are Ben Moore Bar Harbor Beige. I would like it to be a serene space. If I put in a brown carpet, will it feel claustrophobic?

eztia When you think of the word "serene," what images come to your mind? The answer will be different for each person. Some will think city lights a night, others will think of farmland, and others will think of ocean views.
So, if you put a brown carpet in the room, are you thinking about something that will "go" with the existing paint color, or are you thinking "quiet and neutral?" Do you like a lot of light in the room, or do you feel best in a darkened "cozy" space?

carole if it is sunny you could have a darker rug,but i think i would pick a contempory rug, what is the rest of the furniture like in this room??

ellecaliente I'm not designer but I do love the color you've picked out for the walls (though you can't really tell from this photo). By serene, do you want the room to be darker or brighter? I personally love a sunny office. Even if you'd like it dark, I personally would leave the carpet alone and bring more dark colors into the room using decor and large dark brown curtains. Have you thought of using a dark wood flooring instead? The brown carpet does seem a little dated. Good luck!!

sdlicsw Thank you for your comments. I will be seeing psychotherapy clients in my office, so I'm going for a calm space that will appeal to both men and women. I have a simple black desk, black bookshelves, and black framed prints. I have a brown leather love seat and black desk chair. I'm hoping to add a punch of color, (blue?) The window is sunny in the afternoon. The carpet right now, really clashes with the walls. It's hard to tell in the photo, but it is gold. Wood is not in my budget right now, although you're right, that would be the best. I was hoping brown carpet would have a wood-like effect.

astraea I would definitely recommend against any rug or carpet with a bold pattern, that might distract or mesmerize clients. I think studies have shown that pale blues & greens are calming colors.

eztia I agree, no bold pattern for the flooring.

I suggest a flat weave Kilim or Moroccan rug such as those shown below for in front of the patients' seating area, where they will put their feet, to function as a "mud and shoe print" mat. It would be good if this rug could be cleaned every two or three months.
Use a neutral taupe, gray-beige, or tan wall-to-wall carpet.
With the black furniture and neutral wall color, I suggest a watercolor landscape on a side wall. It is sometimes easier to talk while looking at a painting than while looking directly at the therapist.
