Dining room decor Help! Military housing
I live in military housing so there's not a lot I can change. I can paint but I'd like it to be my last resort.

I just put curtains up but what should go on the wall with the small sunburst mirror? I feel like its too small for the space. How about a rug? I was thinking sisal rug to tie in with the baskets in the small book case on the side but I'm not really sure. Help! Thanks!

calikym The chandelier and mirror are too small. Get a huge print with color in your style for that wall!

tearnold001 You could put up a larger mirror or if you have a large piece of art that would work. If you don't like that idea I would try a cluster of mirrors, art or what ever you have. What you have up there is just too small.

Lauren Bray I was also thinking flowers for the middle of the table...any ideas on what kinds would look pretty? pop of color?

calikym A mirror only reflects what is already there. Girllll you need color - a huge print is cheap from places like ZGallerie, Pier1, Crate n Barrel. Etc. make it big and colorful. I mean really big. You will love it! Go check it out. I saw someone posting $100 canvas prints on here a few days ago that were around 4ftx3ft...cheap way to really liven things up espec since its just military housing. Goooo... NO More mirrors. Lol!

tearnold001 Instead of flowers I would find a beautiful bowl with some glass fruit or something colorful. You can put coffee beans in the bottom of the bowl and it makes arranging easier and adds a lovely aroma.

tearnold001 I love mirrors too! I have them everywhere and if you like them, use them.

elklaker You definitely need color. A large print is a great idea. One of my favorite and inexpensive "artwork" projects is to frame sheets of scrapbook paper. You can use acrylic frames for a more casual look or more formal wood frames. Group complementary patterns. Go for maybe 6 or 9 for a dramatic look. I did this to stage my flip houses and the buyers often wanted to keep them. Have fun but add color for life in your temporary home. Thank you or your husband for your service!

Jayme Hobbs I like sisal..but because there is not a lot of color or pattern in the room, maybe an area rug with some interesting colors/pattern?

victoriagrennan Maybe a vibrant wall paper that goes with the colour scheme you want or maybe a centre mirror and a statement light

Lauren Bray The wall is about 10 ft wide and 8 ft tall...so how big of paintings/canvas should I be looking at? As for the area rug, I'll try to find something with pattern! thanks!

clemenza2 How about this? Unscrew the lightbulbs, remove the hurricanes and pack them away, and replace them with clip on shades. If you can't paint the room, consider buying a huge canvas and wrap it with a beautiful fabric, stapling it around the edges. The canvas will be relatively light in weight and easy to hang. Consider covering it with a fabric shower curtain (don't laugh, these come in large sizes and often feature beautiful prints) or a drapery panel -- Lowe's has beautiful ones. The canvas can be expensive (like, $100) but you can get them at Michael's with the 40% off coupon they print every week in the paper (at least where I live). Pick a color from the fabric and buy solid drapes to blend......also, if you can remove the blinds temporarily, a bamboo shade would look much better and warmer, as would the sisal rug you're thinking of. And it would be very inexpensive at Ikea's.....a basket of green apples in the middle of that beautiful dining set would look so nice......have fun with this project and most of all -- THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!

carolins Maybe this ideabook will be an inspiration...

Ideabook: Steep Your Rental in Color — Without Painting the Walls

Although hanging curtains is a great idea to bring a warmer feel to the space, the white ones you chose don't really have a significant impact.
You do need some colour or pattern or both and you're right about the mirror... far to small :-) I'd rather put a nice colourful print up there (calikym gave you some great sources), choose a rug first and get your colours from there. If you find a rug that isn't big enough, get two and put them next to each other, tape them together on the back for safety. Since your dining table is square, a square rug is best. Put together two rectangular ones et voilá... squarish rug.

Don't you have some great photos somewhere? You can have them printed on canvas.... Or... buy two blank canvasses and get creative :-) Simplest art: apply masking tape in a pattern you like, if you have two canvasses let the pattern follow through on the second canvas, paint the canvas in the colour of your choice, remove masking tape...

To give you some ideas to add some colour to your room, I just chose yellow and grey, but you can go with any colour you like of course.

eztia I would NOT get a sisal rug, I see a baby high chair in the room. You will be needing to sweep and mop that floor every day.

Did you know that you can have you own favorite photos made into framed canvas art? In my city, Walgreen's Pharmacy has a photo developing area in the store.

I think a 36x48 or a 48x60 size of bright artwork or textile would be a good size.

carolins You could also consider to put a side-table in the room with a nice lamp on it, will be a friendlier light than the chandelier.

angela428 Thank you and your family for standing watch and keeping us safe. There are lots of fun things to do depending on your style. If you like funk many of the old stores (there is a show the PickernSisters) apparently they find old items and redo them.

According to feng shui a dining room should be simple and clean, so that the people eating concentrate on the food and the presentation.
The company WallTat has many options of decals that go on walls and come down when you leave, they stick on and are lovely. Also, if you Google murals you will find some nice ones of all birch trees in white very designer oriented and also removable with no mess.

For the table a long runner perhaps in a gold color with an assortment of old and odd size candle stick holders straight down the middle with all white candles, would be lovely. Mix them up, find them at tag sales etc.

I know the chandelier has to stay there and you have inspections I think, but if possible the tiny Christmas lights with a white cord wrapped in an around and dropping down would add some fun to this piece if you are permitted. If not hang crystals from it, they can go up and down for dinner parties.

Thank you again, you work hard and move a lot, but you and your family we owe a lot to so may I please say thank you from all of us.

Lauren Bray Thanks everyone! I'll keep everything in mind and try to find coordinating patterns and colors to brighten up the room! All the ideas were great! Thanks so much!

Jeffrey Brooks Interior Design How about placing both mirrors on the wall and adding two or three more? All round with different frames. New chandalier like an inexpensive white drum shade, lower from the ceiling (rule of thumb for chandalier height= 30" from table top to bottom of fixture). If you think you have an overdose of mirrors, then try adding a couple of pieces that have shape and depth like a wall mounted clock, sculpture or brackets painted white with some vases standing on them.
