Need ideas for deck replacement
We are replacing this deck (but leaving the newly built stairs). We will reuse the glass railing system on the new deck. I won't be saving the climbing plants. We want the same size deck, but I think that it could use some detail to make it look more grounded and less like it is hanging off the house. I'm thinking bigger posts might do it. Maybe some kind of fascia board detail? Would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

rinqreation Stone pillars with large square white poles on them.
Or pillars ending in siding/wall, as if it were a porch.

antonia1 Excellent ideas. The stone base had occurred to me, but not the wall idea. Thanks.

Deck and Patio Company "Outdoor Living Experts" Big posts are good, but I would add 2 - 3 2' square stone columns (all the way up to the top of the rail height so you can see them from the deck and from the ground) to act as the supports for the deck. These columns would be at the two outer corners of the deck and one possibly in the middle. There are several different ways it could be constructed ( masonry, pressure treated wood with wonderboard) and than covered with a lightweight concrete stone veneer like cultured stone. This might make the impact you are looking for.

inkwitch Because the photo is small, it's hard to tell what's going on under the deck. If that is painted a darker color, it would help to paint it white as well, which would give the whole house a foundation. It does look like the thing is sort of floating there!

Like the idea of larger columns, but I wonder if stone wouldn't look too "heavy" for the style. The upper with the glass barrier looks airy and more "modern." You don't, at this point, have a "craftsman" style. Do some searches (houzz has a bunch of this stuff) for porches. I'd like to see some more options.

antonia1 The bottom of the house is painted the same as the top, it is just the shadows that make it look darker. You are right that the stone may look too heavy. I am interested in maybe adding somecraftsman details. Do you think 3 or 4 posts and what size should they be. I was thinking about 10" but I'm having a hard time visualizing.
