Would like kitchen booth... Can't figure out how!
We have an area in our condo that is useless to us. It's the dining area - too small for a decent size table and stuck between the sofa in the living room and the eat-at counter, it's not the least bit inviting. We never, ever eat there. I love to eat at a restaurant and sit at a "Banquette." Love it!!! Is there any way to make i work in our 9'x11' space? Thanks, Suzanne D

Redbud Custom Homes Absolutely ... check out the pictures we have on our Projects page, we have 2 banquettes that we have done. Both spaces are not much different in size. It would be nice if you could open the counter area to the kitchen to make the kitchen flow into this space.

suzdandeneau I think what I'm struggling with is making it work with the back of the sofa and the countertop sticking out. I loved all the ideas and would do it in a heartbeat, if I could visualize how to fit it into this particular windowless space. Thank you so much for your help. I'll try to draw it out and see how it might come together.

oneofeleven I think you might have to change the counter top (hopefully it's not granite) or find someway to even it out with the wall. You could make an L shape configuration putting one bench on the wall with the mirror and the other against the bar wall. A small round table in the middle?

nukiegirl Looks like you use your counter bar. Do you eat at that now or eat in the living room as we do and watch tv? You didnt show the rest of your living room and just because there is a light above that area you can change your great room area around and perhaps the banquette would fit else where in the great room. Another option if u move your dining area is to do a pendant where the current light is or a ceiling fan and move your couch back further and if the need for a dining table for company get a coffee table that lift up to table height or a sturdy type folding table with a nice tablecloth on it. Posting more pixs of the whole layout would help .

Brenda Sjoberg If you don't eat there, why have it. Remove it, it also nice to have open space.

Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. I would be much more useful to have a professional come in and help you with the use of your space. but banquettes have to be one of my all time favorite ways to get luxurious everyday seating. My last design incorporated on underneath a built in bookshelf - so it can be done, just be aware of your seat height, and build it in right underneath the pass through!

decoenthusiaste You do need a banquette and there are so many great ones. Can you remove the overhanging counter and place one there with a new table and chairs? Then swag the chandy over to hang above it. If you like to retain the bar, you could put the banquette on the wall where the floor mirror is and swag the fixture over a new table and chairs. Buit-ins are nice but not as flexible. With a banquette and expandable table, you can always host more people by adding a few chairs. Here's one with two banquettes if you love them so.

lefty47 HI -- You could do it very easily by getting a upholstered storage bench ottoman . If you get a longer one then use that as seating against the wall . God knows you could use the storage it would provide being in a condo. You could even have two if you needed and place the other behind the sofa to make an L shaped banquette area. But if you don't need or use the table and chairs then don't have them, - although I see you use the table for sewing. There are many dual purpose furniture pieces now made for limited spaces . Fold out coffee tables and stacking and folding chairs that can come out for entertaining. I certainly would not buildin a permanent banquette .

Home Style You could make a lovely little cozy corner with a banquette that runs part or all the way up the wall with mirror and makes a 90 degree turn and backs up to sofa with a little table in the corner. Ballard makes one http://www.ballarddesigns.com/benches/tribeca-collection/ that you might like and can be added to or have a local upholsterer make one for you, just the right size. The ByDesign ideas are lovely, too!

Kelly Smith My suggestion would be instead of a corner booth-style banquette, have a straight bench seat on one or both sides, and since it's a small space, have the table fold up into the wall. This way, you can still utilize your bar area (that it looks like it's used for the laptop), and you won't feel like your home is so compacted.

suzdandeneau You guys are amazing... My head is spinning, but in a good way. Here are pictures of the rest of the room. I'll get myself a nice cup of coffee and sit down to digest all these great ideas.

suzdandeneau Sorry, duplicated the ones above!

oneofeleven If you decide against the banquette you could always do something like this and if you get tired of it you can use the chairs elsewhere.

nukiegirl Not sure if I am correct but it appears there is a hallway on the far side of your vertical mirror. If so I would do your banquette where your horizontal mirror is and move the couches in and the other one further back to the counter bar where your dining room table is now. and remove the wood chair on the side of your couch. There were lots of nice pixs posted of ideas! Very nice condo! Love the fireplace!

suzdandeneau Hi nukiegirl! Gee, I'm having trouble picturing just what you mean. There is a hallway on the far side of the mirrorthat goes to the left... I can't see how the couch could be where the dining table is now? Thanks for your time in helping me figure this out:)

nukiegirl You have an open floor plan so you can change the room however you want with your furniture. So by removing the dining table and have the couch moved bac if would be an isle way separating your counter bar from the lvingroom. When moving the other couch in towards the fireplace you opened up the wall for your banqutte. Hope that makes sense to you. Of course the light over the table would have to be changed. Sorry I dont have the computer talent to make a drawing
