Help with bathroom tile
We are in the process of purchasing a house. Ironically, the only two rooms in the house that I don't care for are the only two rooms in the house that have been renovated. Here is a photo of the bathroom. I don't love this dark marble on the walls. We have to do some pretty pricey fixes to the house so I was hoping I could paint over these and rip out that trim.

Do you know if I can paint over marble tile? It is a bit porous and has natural cracks and crevices. Not like ceramic tile. If not, what would you do?

Maryl Hershelman wow! that's a waste of perfectly good floor tile....what were they thinking? Is that a shower as well? painting it could make it worse imagine that? large artwork maybe movie posters...it kind of looks like a 1930's theatre...with matt silver frames. check TJ Maxx. Temporary cheap and big....

ktiquet Wow what does the other room look like? I wouldn't paint over it what about one of those plastic tub surrounds? Until you can fix it the way you want to?

Naomi Frash I would leave it and just paint the trim all white :0

angelacpersico Yeah, this tile is in the shower and on the floor. Thanks for your comments, I think I may just hang a really tall curtain rod and hide it behind a nice shower curtain. I would hate to make it look worse!

kjh72 I was wondering if you had other pictures of the room. I sell tile and do have customers that LOVE the look of the Emperador Dark marble. I'm wondering with the right paint and maybe changing the fixtures to an oil rubbed bronze finish you could change the whole look. I have seen some gorgeous glass and Emperador mosaic that you could put on you backsplash and it would tie in with the shower. I don't think it's a lost cause. You may be surprised that you can get a very rich high end look. Will you be able to post other pics? Thanks!

angelacpersico Sure thing, kjh. Here are a few other angles. what you can't see is a large built in closet unit that is painted white. I would love to hear any of your ideas!

kjh72 Thanks for the pics! Looking at the shower it looked a bit overwhelming but seeing the other pics helped. It comes together more. My suggestions of oil rubbed bronze fixtures and tiled backsplash are out. I'm glad you added the pics. I'm sure finding a really neat taupe/gray shower curtain, coordinating rugs and towels will soften the look. Once you do that you may be surprised that you'll like the tile!

kjh72 Another thought. If you were to add tile. There are many neat styles of glass and stone mosaics with the Emperador dark in them. You could tile part way up on the sink & toilet wall and run the accent right at backsplash height. The accent could tie in with the shower.

Maybe paint the walls a lighter color, so you have something in between the very white of the fixtures and the very dark of the tile.

This looks like a DIY job, the saddle should match the tile and they used the molding to avoid cutting partial tiles.

angelacpersico Great tips! Thanks! I think the molding has got to go either way! Definitely a DIY job. The kitchen is similar. Haphazard and slightly mismatched. I will post pics of that soon too.

Judy M The molding is there to hide the raw edge of the marble tiles. I would paint the molding around the tub the same color as the wall, so it blends in better. Pick a lighter tan from the tile and paint the walls, then see if you can find a shower curtain with white, the brown of the tile and the tan of the walls all in it.
Paint and a shower curtain could make it look much better. can't see the window, but maybe a plantation shutter would work.

bevballew That marble actually is beautiful when put with cream marfel marble. So as suggested by Judy put a lighter tan, shower curtain and plantation shutter and it should look great. It looks like you have a nice sink and toilet. Wondering if the taupe walls are too dark and a lighter than would like nice but not too light to not have a contrast with the white of the sink and toilet.
