Sydney study needs help - what do I do with this study/sitting room?
This is the only room in the house that I can nearly claim as my own, but it's become The Room of Leftover Furniture.
The room is longish and narrow. It needs a refresher so that it feels peaceful and stylish.
The bookcases must stay (I know they are cluttered, need to declutter). The chair at the desk is one of our dining room chairs - probably could do something better. The chairs must stay, they are too expensive (Natuzzi spa leather) to replace. The chest was my very first piece of furniture that I bought in college, so I'd like to keep it for sentimental reasons. It could go to another room though. Everything else can stay or go.
One dilemma is the chest has a heating vent under it, so in winter that piece has to go somewhere else.
This door into this room is our front door and main entrance into the house. I've always left the wall (the red one) blank because it gets banged with backpacks, grocery bags and golf clubs. I used to like the statement red wall, but I think I'm sick of it now. Red is one of my favourite colours though.
A colour change? Something grey or cool? Change the artwork to something else - perhaps it just needs new colours in here? A rug? The fireplace (which we don't use by the way)?
This room is used as my home office a couple days a week, a research spot for the kids homework when the computer is needed, and is meant to be my retreat - a quiet space to read, catch up on a movie, chill. I'm not feelin' in this room right now though.
Dear Houzzers, help.....would love your suggestions, especially budget suggestions as I can't really spend a lot on this room right now.
Thank you!

1. Paint the walls and desk chair. If you still feel unfinished...
2. Get new pillows for the chairs with colors from the art/wall colors.
3. If you still feel it's unfinished, get an area rug too.
You can even toss in a small dose of yellow accesories from the small art piece. It's a pretty room and won't take much to be your favorite room in the house. :)
What do you think of the artwork on the wall - too busy or okay? They are some photography and pencil artwork that I had and all relate to Memphis (where I'm from). I can't decide if one larger piece would be better.
The rug - too dark? I know it's just beige but it fit the budget, feels great, etc. Also, we banked it up against the fireplace so that there was room in front of the desk to easily slide out the chair and the kids wanted it up close to the fireplace so they could lean their pillows against it. We don't use the fireplace by the way. Does it look odd since it is not in balance with the chairs?
I just brought some pillows in from the connecting room, and I think they work. They definitely lighten up the dark chairs. What do you think? If you don't like them, what would you suggest?
I don't mind the red anymore, now that I have calmed things down a bit. Now it feels more like touches of red rather than red everywhere.
I'm working on a plan for the fireplace and once Pottery Barn arrives in Australia in May I'm sure they will have a file cabinet that is more like furniture - all I can find here is Officeworks type stuff.
Thanks for your suggestions - keep them coming, more to do to get this room right.
