Seperate toilet or not? we can't agree
Hi all, my husband and i are embarking on a project build, in the plans, next to each other, they have a seperate toilet - no wash basin and no room for one - and the bathrroom with washbasin, bath and shower, no real other storage. I hate the fact the toilet doesn't. Have a washbasn and want o knock the wall between the rooms. This would eliminate the 2nd door and free up some space for some storage. My husband thinks a seperate toilet is a bonus in a house and wants to keep it. What do you all think? We will have an ensuite in the master bedroom so this would b mainly used by our son and any guests, thanks for any replies

shortped Are u saying the bathroom next to bedroom #3? Why would they put the toilet in a room without connection to room with sink?! Gross! No one will wash their hands after toileting?! Open the wall!

LB Interiors I like the separate toilet area but it doesn't need to be a full wall. Maybe close off the door to the toilet and open up a 1/2 wall from the bath side with access to that area.

shortped I agree that a half wall for privacy is lovely...I really like the second pic, but no availability, archway, or something to sink is just wrong.

trionanicg Thanks all! I know, I think it's so gross, all the germs on the door handle :( it's actually very common here in Australia.
The reason my husband liked it is there would be access to the toilet for guests if someone was in the shower or bath so a half wall doesn't solve it for him.
This, I feel, is a moot point as we'll have an ensuite and we only have guests 5/6 times a year for a couple of days at most.

rawketgrl Words fail me. Toilet area must have a sink in it. I guess your options to cut down on the chance of illness for your family and friends are...
-Combo toilet sink
-Tear out wall
-Very small but separate sink
-Auto door feature so you don't have to touch it and can walk to kitchen sink or another sink to wash up without touching anything 1st.
-Transporter to beam you to the sink... LOL..
Good luck! :D

ASVInteriors What about a sliding wall compartment? This would mean you could close off the room to a private toilet, but could open it as necessary. (and hopefully keep it open forever)

olldbobbi You could do a wet room: [houzz=

trionanicg Good to know everyone agrees with me! Everyone here thinks I'm completely overreacting about insisting on having a sink/washbasin in the same room as the toilet.

I couldn't believe in a new build they're not incorporating it, the building rep was quite surprised I brought it up!

olldbobbi A bathroom without a sink is just gross! Where are you located?

olldbobbi Ok, so I'm guessing there's no code that dictates what you put in a bathroom? Narsty!

K.O.H. Construction Corporation We have several relatives that live in Australia. This subject of toilet only room never came up. I need to ask them about it. I do remember shaking hands on their last visit. hmmm

S. Thomas Kutch Separate watercloset rooms have been the norm in Europe for centuries, I suspect the tradition carried over to Australia with the original immigrants.....with that said, most also have a wash basin with them.

Here's a solution that might solve both of your needs. Rotate the tub 90 degrees and relocate it parallel to the dividing wall between the bathroom and the watercloset. Move the shower down the wall towards the lavatory and move the tub and the dividing wall as needed to allow space in the watercloset for wall mounted sink or vanity.

Problem solved...you avoid the narrow long bathroom that you have now and your husband get the separate watercloset with a means to wash ones hands................win, win.
