Please, I Need help with my living/dining room area
Hello,

I am not sure what to do with my living/ dining room..My walls are mostly beige and there is some plum color in my lounge. My curtain is off white.

My lounge suit is sand color, I have orange and soft green cushions. Coffee table and TV stand is nut brown and my dining table chairs are suede raisen.

I Have a white TV bench as well. Shall I use the white one or the nut brown TV stand matches with my coffee table.

Also, I need a rug under the dining table? Shall I go same color or different one?

I want to get a nice rug but I am stuck on the color. Also, the color of the lamp or things to put on the nut brown coffee table...Any suggestions? Thank you so much..
I am going to add some photos.

Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. Hi daisy daisy, Marie here.
Your pillows aren't pulling in the plum paint colour - quickest fix is to pull that plum colour into the space with area rug and toss cushions.

for the rug - go textural - tone on tone - you'll get more longevity out of it
then bring in toss cushions that have both wall, sofa and plum colour in it
(get rid your existing toss cushions - they don't go with anything) - then bring in some hits of antique gold and silver - gold looks amazing with purple...good luck!

Monique E Hi Marie, Thank you so much for your suggestion. I really liked it. How many cushions I should buy? Also, Shall I buy exactly same color of the rug for living and dining room? I rent a place, I am not allowed to put anything on the walls, what else I can do?
One more question, what should I put on the nut brown coffee table as a decor? Many many thanks:)

Monique E Can anyone give some ideas as well?

Monique E Shall I keep that little white lamp and the brown floor lamp?
Shall I use white coffee table or the brown one which matches the TV stand? Where should I put the TV stand? What can I put under the stairs..
In the first pic I posted today says "my lounge" the door is where you enter the garage. That door looks funny to me.. Please please help me and your advices are so important to me. Thank you..

Monique E Btw, I am happy to throw the green lounge suit, if you think it is no good and keep the others..Or anything you need unnecessary..

Andrea Prasch H Moniqiue! Your dining set and coffee tables are great. The sofas however are dated. Why do you have 2 sofas and 2 coffee tables in in one room and right next to each other? If its seating space you need I would do a sofa and two chairs or a sofa, chaise and chair and pick one coffee table. Since you have an open floor plan its all about creating rooms with furniture. You need a rug for your dining and a rug for your living space. What is your style and look you are going for so I can help more :)
Monique E Hi Andrea, Thank you for your reply:) I just put them all so, you could help me to pick coffee tables ( white or the nut brown one?
Green sofa is out of date but the other sand color one is only 1 year old and it is in perfect condition and also I can not afford to buy a new one..I have to stick with it. I will find a picture and show my style of a living room:) I really need help. I can not live like this. I am not sure what to keep what to throw.
Andrea Prasch Great Monique! In that case I was drawn to the white coffee table because it is different then the dining table. Anything you don't like start cleaning house and selling on craigslist. I was in the same boat as you and had champagne taste on a beer budget. I found it easiest to sell off everything I could and put it towards new furnishings. I love Zgallerie furniture but their price tags were a tad steep for me so I started searching craigslist and almost all my "new" furniture is from craigs that was used to stage homes. It's truly amazing what you will find. I would find your style and if the stuff you have doesn't fit your style get rid of it. It's easier to start from a blank canvas then decorating around stuff.

Andrea Prasch PS I really like that floor lamp it should stay
2 months ago · ·
Monique E Thank you Andrea:) I just want my living room nice, fresh and cosy. I love pot plants and flowers. I like some colors as well.
Monique E Probably those living rooms will be my style. I tried to choose the modest ones.:)
Andrea Prasch Okay based off of the other furniture I would say you have a contemporary style. If you can I would see how much you can get for all the stuff you hate and try and get a new couch. Urban Home is very reasonable. This couch and rug is what i see for your space. Bring in pops of color with art and accessories. www.etsy.com is great for very affordable and handmade pillows and art. Choose what color speaks to you!

Monique E one more...
Monique E I will get rid of that white book case and the other book case and tall boy.
Monique E Andrea, I can not get rid of the lounge suit at this stage. I wish I could.:(
2 months ago ·
Monique E I will only leave dining table and chairs, sand lounge suit 3 seater and 2 one seaters. Nut brown TV stand, and the oak side buffet. And I will take it from there. I am juggling between nut brown coffee table and the white coffee tables ( there are 2 white coffee tables next to each other , I put them together ) at this stage. I will get rid of the rest..
Monique E I moved all the things I did not want to the garage .What would be the fist step now? Arranging the furnitures or deciding the color of the carpet ?I liked very much the plum carpet as Marie Hebson advised. Any more ideas please?
Monique E Please, please help me.
Manon Floreat Now that you know which furnishings you are certain you will keep, I would arrange them in your space. A good rule of thumb is to determine your focal point and orient your furniture towards it. Once you know how you'll have your furniture, you'll have a better idea of what rug size to get. A helpful guideline is to have the rug large enough so that at least the front legs of all pieces fit on the rug.

Below is another rug option with some other items that may give you some ideas to pull your space together.

I do hope you keep the contemporary white coffee table!
Andrea Prasch Yes arrange all the furniture first then decide on decor.
Monique E Thank you so much Manon. So you beleive that white coffee tables ( which there are 2 coffee tables there, I just put them next to each other, to make one) are better option than the nut brown coffee table. Is that right?
Monique E The hardest part to arrange the furniture's, Where do you think I should put the 3 seater couch?
Shall I put like on the photo?
Monique E As I am not allowed to hang a pictures on the wall. What would be another option to do? I want to have a vase and put some flowers as well. Which colors I should choose? Thank you.
Manon Floreat You're welcome, Monique. Yes, I really like the two coffee tables together. It's an interesting look and is flexible, too.

Monique E Thank you Andrea.
Andrea Prasch So much better Monique!
Andrea Prasch Put that cool floor lamp I saw in one of your pictures next to the couch on the dining room side. Since you can't hang pictures on the wall maybe you could replace the drapes in the dining for a pop of color.
Manon Floreat Yes, I agree to the return of the lamp! I was also thinking you could use an easel to display art since the walls are off limits:

You can also get a sofa table for and display art and other items that way.
Monique E Thank you Andrea and Manon. I will shop for 2 new plum color rugs today. Hopefully I will find some reasonable prices rugs.
Andrea, changing the drapes are good idea:) I will have a look at some drapes as well. As drapes, which color I am going to choose? I am no good with colors or designs.
Many thanks again.
Monique E Manon, as for the sofa tables, I found one, I can afford to buy, Which color I should choose? White or the brown one? Thank you. If I am going to buy, I have to hurry because it is on special.
Manon Floreat Hi, Monique. Let's scratch the sofa table idea. Your sofa is too high for it to work. Instead, how do you feel about a console beneath the front window? If you added a small chair, it might be a good spot for your laptop, letter writing, etc. It will also be a nice spot for some of your plants.

Below is a furniture arrangement with the console idea. I also put the TV on top of the hutch. I'm not sure that the height will be right, though. Ideally, I'd like to see your TV on a horizontal bookcase (see below). It can serve to store your components and some of your books. You'll have to see what works for you.

I've also included a visual of the console before the window idea.

Happy shopping! Please let us know what you come up with.
Monique E Hi Manon,
OMG! You are wonderful. Thank you so much...I will be here shortly and show you a few photos:) I would like to know what you think about them.
Monique E Hi again Manon, Sorry as I am not a native speaker, I have to make sure I understood you right.
When you say floor vase with greenery. Do u mean that the vase would be green? If not, which colors I should look at? I bought a plum cushion today. Let see what you think about that. If it isthe right color , How many I would need ? Such as shall I buy two of them and 2 other colors? I saw 1 gold color cushion it was nice but I was not sure. I am attaching photo of the cushion and a plum color vase. Thank you.
Monique E Btw, I have a white TV bench similar to the you suggested If you pull the page u You will see it. If it is any good I would use that one instead of buying another one.Thank you.
Monique E I am also adding the floor plan.
Monique E What if I put that sofa table brown or white one under the stairs?
Manon Floreat Hi, Monique. By floor vase I meant something like what you posted above: a tall vase that you can put sticks or foliage into. I think your pillows are good! I'd recommend two of them and 2-3 patterned ones as compliments. But before you do that, find a rug. It will really make picking out the other items so much easier.

Here are a couple to consider. They're neutral, which is nice should you decide to change out the aubergine color accents. Yet they will work well with the aubergine, too. They're also on special.

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-woven-Ultimate-Smoke-Dark-Brown-Shag-Rug-8-x-10/5665192/product.html

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Hand-crafted-Brandt-Tan-Wool-Rug/7549861/product.html

I don't like the idea of the console table under the stairs because it would also be right next to your TV.
Monique E Hi Manon, Thank you again for your answer. I was looking plum color rugs. They are very limited and very expensive. The ones you suggested are easier to find. Yes you are right I thought the same thing later on. It will not look nice next to my TV. You have been so good to me.I can not thank you enough.
Monique E Hi again Manon, what are those red dots next to the big couch? Are they coffee tables? :)
Manon Floreat You're very welcome, Monique. I enjoy assisting you - it's fun! The red dots are lamps. The one to the right is your floor lamp and the one to the left is a table lamp. There's another on the console under the window, although you might consider two. (Like in the photo above.)

Look at Overstock.com for area rugs. They have a big selection and reasonable prices. I'd love to see which ones you like. I'm thinking an 8x10 or 7X9 might be best for your seating area. If you have some tape, lay it out on the floor and see what you think.

Andrea Prasch Monique would you consider painting the hutch? It has great bones but the color itself is dated. For your rug what speaks to you? They are all very different looks so what do you envision for your space?
Manon Floreat I have to think about this some more. But, a thought is that you could forgo a rug in the dining room and put the money you save towards something you really like for the living area.

Painting the hutch is a great idea!
Monique E Andrea, I would like to keep the hutch as it is. Because it has meanings for me.
As for rugs I liked the 2nd , 3rd , 6th , 15th. What do you think Andrea?
Monique E Hi Manon, I did not understand you. what does I could forgo a rug mean?
Monique E @ Andrea I can not paint anyway:)) Just in case If I decide to paint the hutch what should be the color?:)
Andrea Prasch Forgo means "forget" about the rug in the dining and just buy one for the living space. I agree with her. I am another open floor plan owner and find that doing one room at a time is the way to go. I know you can not paint your walls but you can bring out colors and textures in you furniture and accessories. Look at the links I attached and see what you like.
Monique E Thanks for the explanation Andrea.
So, none of the rugs I showed you is good?:)
Andrea Prasch I didn't say that Monique. They are all very different and its your home and I think you should go with your favorite and we could work off of that. I know you say you don't have an "eye" but we all have something that speaks to us and is our favorite :)
Monique E It seems like all my furnitures are dated. Maybe I should sell my lounge suit as well.
Monique E Yes, I know It is my home, but you can still tell me Andrea, Which rug you liked?:)
Andrea Prasch I am in school for interior design and have remodeled my home as well as others with conflicting tastes and if its one thing I've learned the only thing that matters is the homeowner is happy. You can come here and get professional advice but at the day if your not happy it won't be "your" home. I want to see your tastes and your favorite picks and we can work off of that. I feel I need to get to know you and your personality more before I can help you design your space
2 months ago · ·
Andrea Prasch I would sell the lounge suite if you could Monique. It is dated. I understand budget and living expenses etc. but we have so many options now. I can send you many links for living room furniture that will work with your budget.
Monique E That would be fine Andrea. You can get to know me. It would be nice.
Monique E I am thinking seriously to sell everything except the dining table and the chair and move the hutch somewhere else in the house. It can stay as it is. I don t want to paint it:) I can put my excess stuff in it.
Andrea Prasch Do you have craigslist where you live? Where are you btw?! LOL
2 months ago · ·

Monique E Hi Manon, Can you please draw again how to arrange the furniture's in the lounge, when you have time please. It was very helpful. I am buying a 2.5 seater plus chaise , ottaman and a single arm chair. Is that a good idea in my launge shape? Thank you:)
Andrea please let know what you think as well. I know you are very good.:) Thank you.
losthorizonlisa Hi Monique, For SURE you aren't allowed to hang things on the wall? That seems very extreme to me. The leases where I live in the US "say" no holes in walls, but they have never cared if I patched and painted over the patches before moving. The leasing offices here have little sample paint pots for renters to use or they will tell you what color matches. Best of luck on that.
Manon Floreat Hi, Monique. Wow, things have changed quite a bit. Your new sectional is much more streamlined than the other set. I think it will work well. You can use the same arrangement as in the above diagram. The only difference is that you won't have a chair to the left of the sectional because that is where the chaise will be. You can still have a chair to the right of the sectional, though.

How is the rug selection coming along?
Monique E Hi, losthorizonlisa, I dont live in the US :) There are strict rules in the complex I live. They can make me paint the whole room which will be costly to me. I don't want problems, As Manon suggested I can use an easel to display art since the walls are off limits. Thank you for your reply:)
Monique E Hi Manon, I am going to choose a dark grey for the chaise.I have to go and see a few of the chaises next week after that I will be busy with the rug selection. I liked this room I attached. Colors are very nice. Tell me please what you think. The difference will be the grey sofa on the picture will be a chaise. And I have to find an arm chair which will suit the chaise.Thank you:)
Manon Floreat I think you can easily create your interpretation of that! You've already got the plum to work with. I think it will be fun to put together and the grey sectional is a good choice. Have fun!

Andrea Prasch Oh Monique I am so glad you are selling your lounge set! I also love the grey, purple and yellow color scheme you chose its so bright and cheerful! Sorry to hear about your lamp but I'm sure your new furniture will make you forget all about it.
Monique E Sorry Manon, I keep disturbing you. I have a question again:)
You advised a console in for the front window. I am attaching the window photo . Because it is higher, so, AM I going to put a console lower or a bit higher for my front window. Also, when you drew a plan there are two dark greens and a light green. Dark greens must be tall vases? IS that right? Light green is a small vase? Can you make it clear for me please. Thank you so much. I appreciate your help deeply.
Monique E Andrea, Thank you so much for your supportive words.:)
After I buy the chaise, Shall I pick up the carpet or I should buy the arm chair and the ottoman and choose the carpet ?
Manon Floreat Hi, Monique. It's fine for your console table to be shorter than the window. I think they're typically hip to waist high.

The green circles around the console table are plants. I thought they might enjoy the natural light from the window. You could even have orchids like below for some more color!
Monique E Hi Manon, Wonderful idea, plants in front of the window.:) Thank you.
Monique E I just wanted to share the chaise I am planning to buy. This color is tweed ivory. I will either get the light or the dark grey.. I could not decide. Dark or light grey is more suitable for my walls ?Your help will be appreciated.
Monique E Thank you.
Manon Floreat I tend to lean towards the light grey. I think I'd put the fluffy off white area rug that Andrea suggested with it. Now that the sofa back will be lower, you can get something that will act like a sofa table for behind the sectional. It doesn't have to be fancy, since you'll never see it. Then you can put art on it that will lean against the wall. Below is a collage of my interpretation of your inspiration picture. It incorporates a lot of the elements we've talked about.
Monique E Looks wonderful Manon, Even tweed ivory color looked good too.Sofa table behind the chaise is a great idea, however I am not sure when I put that behind the chaise, how much space I will have for the ottoman where the coffee table is.Because where I will put the TV and chaise is not that large and it is a high traffic are ( it leads to the kitchen) I hope, I expressed myself as much as I would like. Many many thanks to you. I ask too many questions but I don't want to buy something it will not suit.

Susan Mills Design Monique, I have read through the posts, and I think some posts are missing? Pictures of your home?

I feel the thread has two great sources of inspiration and information, they are giving you good direction. I would not be of assistance if I jump in now. They must have seen pictures I do not see regarding pices you already have. So follow the guidance and also follow your heart. Andrea is right, this is your home and you need to feel it.

Good luck and enjoy the process, you have been given great advice!

That's all I need. I will make the choices, but please give me some feedback. I think, I did not express myself well enough what I needed. I don't want you to choose the furniture's for me I will choose the ones I like:) Sorry If I caused any misunderstanding.Thank you all..
Monique E That is what I am planing to buy.My coffee table, I am tossing between those two. I liked both of them but not sure which one will be more suitable with my grey corner chaise.
Susan Mills Design Ok Monique, I got a bit lost with all the posts. I do like your grey sofa with chaise you posted. I also liked the chair with ottoman, make sure the chair relates to the ottoman in scale and the fabric. When I say scale, I am talking about the width, height and depth of it. They should not be so different. I like the idea of a white rug but is it practical for you? I like the colours of your kitchen, as this is open to your lounge, I would like to see you bring these colours into the Lounge in cushions, rug and art. Manon and Andrea posted many great ideas for you. Which ones did you like?

It's great you have some preferences, bring those kitchen colours in and I'm sure you will be happy with the flow of the rooms as you move though them.

Keep us posted, we love to help, I think we just got a bit lost on this one.

Susan Mills Design The design of the bottom end table is more fitting. The other one is much too ornate.
Monique E As a side table for in front of the window either white or pecan color.Others are very expensive I can afford for this one. However if it is not suitable please tell me. I don't want to buy something it will not suit.
Monique E Thank you soo much Susan Mills.
Susan Mills Design Also Monique, make sure you like how the chair and the sofa feel when you sit in them, check all the seams to make sure they line up, ask about how they are made, look at the insides of the cushions to see the way they have wrapped the foam. Do so e research to be an I formed consumer.

Also check the length of the coffee table and how that will work with the sofa and chaise.
