I have purchased these Thompson dining chairs but they need new upholstery.I was planning to put leather or vynil but i am not sure should i go with off white or black. My sofa is gray and accent chair is black leather

Kaplan Architects, AIA I like the idea of off white color.

sondramartina I am getting new dining table too with wooden top.

roomTEN design You could add some color - if you're going with vinyl, think deep plum or indigo! I think a rich berry or plum would up the baroque of the chandelier and help tie all the elements together. How much fun!

Hillary Nichols Interiors I would actually use a pop of color! You have a great neutral palette and I think using something other than black or white would really make the space more interesting. I would then use the same color and pepper the space sparingly with the same accent color with accessories like frames, art, and small items!

sondramartina I could not find many photo ideas on Houzz with this kind of chairs, just few . rooms. If someone can find more and post it i would appreciate it a lot.

elklaker How about the blue from the pillows or the red from the rug? Need that punch of color.
sondramartina I did not see nice red vinyl just really bright red and I am afraid of very obvious big VINYL look.

roomTEN design I'm thinking Dedar Alchimia - there's alot of options but you're going to have to find a product that isn't cheap shiny vinyl. There's lots of options in specialty fabric shops!

elklaker Check out warehousefabricsinc.com. Pretty ElPaso red vinyl and $9.98 per yard!

sondramartina We brought home piece of black vinyl to try ,not shiny at all. Finding right shade of red could be tricky and hubby is very eager to start .

Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. Why not connect your dining area to your living room - with colour - if you want to go white, then connect by adding white toss cushions to your sofa, or, if you want to keep the blue - then make your dining chairs blue.

you also need to change out your chandelier to something more modern, love the gold medallion on the wall - go with something like this -

Change out your dining room fixture - then bring the blue from living room into the dining room with drapery and seat colour - if you don't want to commit to the blue chairs, then bring in the white, but add white to the living room - creates flow and harmony...good luck

sondramartina Thank you Marie. Would you choose black or white if you were me?

DIAspoton are you going to put a rug under the dining table? picking a up a color like the red from the LR rug would be more interesting than a neutral.
sondramartina I don't have rug for dining room at the moment.

fuzinav The original white adds a lightness to the chairs that would be lost with black. The wooden parts are very pale, a muted color or white would be my choice.
sondramartina I am having hard time picturing table top that will be lighter wood like chair legs but maybe black will make nice contrast?
quatorze Direct answer to your question, I would go with the off white if it's a toss up between black or white. The white will look better with the wood frame, black would overwhelm the spare lines of the frame - all you would see is the black. Since it's vinyl, white will not be a cleaning problem, as it might with a fabric. Other colors are a great idea too, a red, a blue to match your curtains, but the white will go with everything, and will work in other rooms down the road, should you move the chairs. Good luck!

sondramartina It seems that votes go for off-white or other than neutral colour. No one favored black chairs idea .I am heading to the store in couple of hours so I hope I will make up my mind by then.

Gabberts Design Studio Definitely white! Good luck shopping!

sondramartina Thank you all. Decision has been made. White.

groveraxle Hi, sondramartina, I guess I'm too late. But I think you made the right decision with white.
fuzinav Drum style over the table would look great and is more in keeping with your asthetic.
sondramartina I think I will definitely replace it . Sell this one and buy drum pendant. I found one that is similar shade as LR one but what if it is not the same colour but just similar ?
fuzinav That is not a problem..the shapes are complementary and the lights are in different spaces.

Kelly Smiar Interior Design Great purchase,I love those chairs. I think the white/off white looks really fresh and perfect in that room. My 2nd option would be a pop of color like already suggested by some of the other professionals.
Possibly blue to coordinate with you throw pillows.

sondramartina We have started upholstering them in off white vinyl. One is almost done . I think i got them for good price ( 240$ for all 4 ,and it is Gus Modern) but hubby thinks we overpaid since we have to change upholstery. I cant wait to get the wooden table top . I found almost new drum pendant on Craigslist for awesome price too. I will go check this weekend.

Kelly Smiar Interior Design I think that is a great price for the chairs. You house is looking great!

sondramartina Is pendant 24" diameter too big? My table is 6' x 3'

whitwhatup Do the top cushion a large scale houndstooth black / ivory and the bottom cushion in Oxblood red. Perhaps even pipe the chairs in the same color....

Aja Mazin Gus Modern Thompson Set of Two Chairs - Natural Frame/White Vinyl $500.
Four chairs for $1,000.

I would say you got a killer deal at $240 for set of four chairs!!

Killer in white vinyl with natural wood!!

sondramartina Thank you Aja for all the info. One chair had 1" cut and others had few spots. I will keep it white again. Vinyl ,3 meters 45$ . I could not believe it when I found the add for Thompson chairs for that price and 2 blocks from my house!
According to the article 24" dia pendant is ideal .I will check it on Sunday,Craiglist again, almost new, asking price 75$. Not bad i think.

sondramartina This one.

Aja Mazin Is your coffee table also a Gus Modern?

It's design suggests a similar style.

Aja Mazin 2 blocks from your house?

It was meant to be!
sondramartina No,it is from Home Sense.
I am hoping to slowly convince my husband to sell this entertainment unit and for that money I can get something else but it needs to have good storage . Maybe credenza, not sure yet. I don't want to overwhelm him with changes. Any suggestion about that piece?
Aja Mazin sondramartina,

I like it and I appreciate the storage space, but I understand that it is not your style.

[You can always paint it black and change the hardware!!]

Aja Mazin I love your taste and style.
I find you unpredictable! You do the unexpected and the result is FANTASTIC!!

I wish I had such vision.
sondramartina Thank you Aja but I don't see myself that way. The worst thing is that I don't have any vision when buying furniture and accessories. That's why I shop where I can return or Craiglist because its cheap so if it does not work I did not loose lots of money. Big items are ok,I don like them to be cheap and I know what I like. And for rugs from my experience Persian rug works everywhere, with any style and always look good .

Kelly Smiar Interior Design 24" pendant will work great for that size table.

antje121 Scandinavian blue for the upholstery. Love the ones Hilary posted. Daringly elegant.
richardparker You're on your way, but after a few drinks, tell Hubby you need to pick p a little rug for the table area too. Even a broadloom remnant of a neutral would really make it its own area.

paulholley Hi! For my taste I would bring in a fabric with mixed colors...perhaps black and white. The chairs look as though they'd be easy enough to reupholster. Go to a fabric store and check out the upholstery fabrics. You'll go wild!

sondramartina What other 2 chairs could look like? or some interesting bench? It should be something to add some texture to the room. Thanks
