Kitchen ranges...duel fuel?
Looking at 6 burner ranges..is cost of duel fuel worth it? also most "professional" ranges are not self cleaning...again a big upcharge. also they are sooo low to the floor. looking at thermadore but $7000 and not even viking. looked at Bertazonni - shallow oven. not sure wall oven will work....space limited. suggestions please!

Arc & Angle Home Builders, LLC Go with all gas. Bakes and broils better anyways.

ellejulia thank you!

bookwench "looking at thermadore but $7000 and not even viking". Viking is not the end-all-be-all of cooking. Consider features vs. brand recognition. Thermador has the extreme low heat setting; Viking doesn't. I have been seeing a lot of Thermador in multi-million dollar homes.

ellejulia Yes, that and the large oven is a plus. i am trying to rework the design to use a wall oven but i dont think it will work. all the "pro" style ranges are soo low. thanks!

feeny We went for an all gas range (Wolf), but when we were researching it and talking to friends who are cooks, we found that most people said the dual fuel was better for serious bakers, whereas the all gas was preferred by those who did lots of roasts. Dual fuel has self-cleaning option (in Wolf at least), whereas all gas doesn't. I bake; hubby roasts. Hubby is the better cook. So thus our choice of all gas.

mmilos My parents have the 36" all gas Viking - purchased in the mid-90s.

Some complaints they have:
1. The large single oven needs a long time to preheat.
2. Cleaning isn't very easy.
3. Igniters on burners need to be replaced about every 2 years.

lewis + smith I would avoid the Bertazzoni. Thermador makes a nice range. Wolf as well.
One option is to go with a 36" cooktop and a 36" built in oven. It is cheaper than the 6 burner dual fuel. It is also a cleaner look on the countertop.

bookwench I just want to add that Thermador has the convection-steam oven. It's a fabulous invention!

dragdoc We're going with a wolf gas range and electric wall oven with a microwave above. Good luck! I know these decisions are tough!

ellejulia thats sounds really nice. unfortunately i dont have the room for a wall oven. think i am going with the 36 in Jenn-air range in gas. it has some great features and is self-cleaning....very important for me. now i am looking into counter depth french door refrigeratures...stainless. again the range of prices is crazy. would like to spend around $2000-2500 instead of $3000. good luck with your kitchen! any refrigerator suggestions welcome!

revss Have read that self-cleaning ovens are very hard on cupboards! Experienced comments?

Deborah Butler, Brickwood Builders Have never had any issues with self cleaning oven damaging a cabinet. I can imagine however that the thermofoil cabinets could be affected.

favoritegram I have a thermador 48 inch and my large oven is self cleaning I put it in 4years ago when the kitchen was remodeled. We looked at all brands and found this to be the best.

ellejulia i had self cleaning thermador wall ovens and never had an issue with maple cabs. however i did not let the oven get too dirty so that i could use a short cleaning cycle.
