Living Room Help For Our First Home
Hi we have recently moved into our first home and have so far furnished the living room with a few basic items. We would be really grateful for your ideas and help on how to take it further. Looking for help with furniture, colour themes, placements etc. Any tips and advice would be most welcome. Thank you!

Annette Rowland I think you should wall mount the tv above the fireplace, and move the couches off of the wall to allow for a more conversational friendly room.

rinqreation It looks good to start with. Pull the entire seating area towards the door, so the rug lines up with the fireplace (the speaker can go next to the couch). Get two small coffeetables to go next to the 3seat (you can put them in the middle when you need them for serving). Find two lounge chairs (accent color?) to place on the door side and maybe a sidetable to place behind the couch (below the window). My opinion is the chandelier doesn't fit in, maybe you can find a lamp that matches those on the wall (f.e. a large sphere). And place a floor lamp between the couches, some art on the wall above the 3seat. You could pick an accent color (lounge chairs?) and pick different shades to decorate and/or paint.

rinqreation Sorry, I would not mount the tv that high, it's really not ergonomic.

Long Island Mantel/Island ArtScreen Mounting the television above the fireplace is a great idea. By doing this, you create two focal points in one area. This makes arranging your furniture a breeze. Also, a added benefit with television above the fireplace, if you have little people running around it keeps the television out go their reach. If you do not want to see the television, you can opt to use our ArtScreen. This conceals the television behind art work.

k8an Thank you for all the tips so far. We were thinking about placing either a round or rectangular mirror above the fireplace. What do you guys think? Also can you please suggest some cushion styles and colours. Any other feedback would be much appreciated.

decoenthusiaste Consider putting the TV opposite the FP on a great console, or in the corner to the left of the FP. If you replace the chandy with something gorgeous and it will reflect in the mirror, then go for it. If the mirror will just reflect the opposite wall or TV, you need art instead. Lots of great accent colors work with gray, so pick one you like. Search the box above for gray sofas under Photos, and you'll see lots of inspiration.

Manon Floreat I think your arrangement works well and your neutral base is perfect for any accent color you like.

A larger area rug would better define the seating area. What you currently have is just a smidge too small. The addition of upholstered arm chair to the left of the fireplace with a martini table and floor lamp would work well. I like the below womb chair in a bold color and think its curves serve as a nice counterpoint to your linear sofas.

Mirrors are popular above fireplace and are great for reflecting light. Art is another option.

I agree that the chandelier does seem a little out of its element. You could think about replacing it with something a little more substantial. I'd also add a floor lamp to the left of the the sofa. Perhaps the below would appeal to you:

Bubbles Glass Modern Chandelier Solaria Large Light Dining Room Lighting Ceiling

Art Deco Lite Source Tullio Tripod Polished Steel Floor Lamp

Also attached are some pillows that might work for you. You've got a great start. I hope you share your progress with us.

k8an Hi Manon, your ideas and product suggestions are great! The chandelier is very cool and funky. The current chandy was left by the previous owners so we have left it there for now. We live in London and I will try to find similar products on sale here. We like warm colour such as orange and red. Keep the ideas coming people, this is a great website!

Lee Webbstock why not first start with a accent wall? The room looks very cold at the moment and yet you have stunning floors. What is the feel you want to create in this room? I do agree with mounting the tv above the fire place, and add some moulding around it,like in the pic that Long Island had posted. Does the room get a lot of sun?

kathleen MK All you need is ART.(and a few accents like pillows and pottery).I like your idea of a big mirror over the fire place or a bright piece of art. Frame a museum poster or just splash some paint of a canvas for your own abstract. Small accent tables with storage would be useful and can be pops of bright color. something from a flea market that echo the chandelier's lines but spray painted glossy red or a citrus color. A few quirky accents(mercury glass?) could tie in the chandelier until you found something you love.

It's a Beautiful World! Since all your colors so far are neutral, pick one or two bright colors you enjoy and are ready to live with as your accent colors. Then find some artwork in these colors and put it up on the wall. You will then see which other pieces of your decor, such as pillows, should have these accent colors. For example, if you like red, you can hang something like this above the sofa and add some pillows with similar shades of red... Raisa

k8an Agree the living room really needs some colour. Thinking of starting with pillows. Which range do you guys like from this website:

k8an We bought these orange cushions with orange, silver and charchol embroidery. We are planning to have 2 for the 2 seater and 2 for the 3 seater. We are planning to keep the orange ones but also bought the white one with orange and black strip. Which one do you guys like and how many cushions should we have for each sofa?

normalinda1 I think a round decorative mirror above your FP would look great, especially with your chandelier. Your place is too small with a TV over the FP and your neck would be killing you. I love the accent pillows too. Three looks good. You can get panels for the windows to match. A rectangular coffee table with glass top and metal frame would look great in the room as well.

k8an What do you think about this pillow?
k8an I was only able to find 2 matching cushions. Need 4 in total; 2 for the 2 seater and 2 for the 3 seater. Not sure what to do. Whether to keep the 2 orange cushions and buy 2 other non matching orange cushions or return them. What do you think?

tlsq I think I would paint the fireplace wall a charcoal color (the sides of that wall also) so that the fireplace features pop. I might also put a wood mantle to tie the fireplace in with the floor. Then a nice mirror. I love the orange and those last pillows are incredible. I would move the rug to center with the fireplace then place the sofas in the L shape that you have. The TV could be cornered to the left of the fireplace, next to that door (not sure if door opening would be affected.) but it would take the tv out of the picture so the fireplace is a focal point. Then a side table or window seat under that beautiful window, using your cool pillows. It is a beautiful room. Enjoy.

laurakaplandesigns Congratulations!! Your room has great bones. Consider built-in media/ bookcase on each side of the fireplace. How about a warm gray wall (Benjamin Moore Edgecomb gray is a good one that may blend nicely with your leather furniture). I would paint the built-ins to get a sleek streamlined look- the same color, but in a gloss. Then choose an accent color- a rich orange/ persimmons or turquoise with black or white accents. I like to start with a few basics and get that done then add to it until finished. It's easier when starting out. Another approach is find a photo you like and emulate the style. Good luck!

laurakaplandesigns P.S. it's more fun to start with pillows , but get the basics first, it's easier that way. Think rug, walls, big layers first then add pops of color!

beetago your room is devoid of anything that is personal or relates to the owners of this room...decide what you love and put it in your room and make it yours by inserting anything and everything you love!
If you read, put baskets in to hold your books, if you paint, put in your easel, if you love family, put in photo's....that is the way to make others feel comfortable in your home and communicate who you are. Forget the department store cookie cutter decor...it's boring and overdone anyway.

tstarz I love the windows in your room. The way they take three walls creates its own unique space. i think by placing the couch right in front of it you lose it. I would leverage the natural light by creating a seating area there, like a separate nook in your living room. Knowing London, it can be grey and gloomy and this spot will be always lighter than the rest of the living room. Would it work if you pull the couch more into the room and place a reading chair there, maybe a small table or a low book shelf? This way your rom will be more centered around the fireplace and the rug size will fit in better.
I love the mirror you got. The orange pillows with circles on them you considered earlier will tie in nicely together.

tstarz With my previous suggestion, you will need to put TV into the corner where the plant is now. Put the plant by the window, it will like it too :)

k8an Seating area near the windows sounds great! So confused about the pillows - the ones we got today are not what I was expecting to have. I just had a different vision. More bright and based on orange. Thinking about returning these.

Manon Floreat Hi, k8an. I was thinking you could do orange solid pillows with patterned ones. Something like this might appeal to you. I like the modern take on the stripes and chevrons.

ETA: The mirror looks great!

k8an I'm still looking for the best pillow covers. The stripes have been returned. Found these that I like. The modern orange fruit and grey is reversible.

inkwitch I've not read all the comments so some of this may repeat. However, first off, absolutely, the front feet of all your seating must be on the rug. Do not feel as if you have to spread the furniture out to take advantage of every square foot of the room. Do not shove the sofa against the wall. You want to create an arms-length conversational grouping. For that reason, given the size of furniture and room, that coffee table will not work. If you want something you can put your feet on, pick a smaller scale wood or metal coffee table, something rustic.

Square your furniture up with the FP. You can't ignore it and you can't off-center the furniture. You could add 1 fabric chair to flank long sofa, if it's a small-scale piece.

Then the window alcove gives you an option for another seating vignette with a lounge, a reading chair, floor lamp, and table, a small "cafe" style table with 2 chairs for morning coffee. Or nothing.

Love the orange accents. Need an end table between the 2 sofas. Floor lamp at other end. Moving TV to corner w/plant is a good idea. Wall mount if at all possible with corner cabinet for electronics.

Love the idea of a mirror above the FP, especially if it reflects a colorful painting on the opposite wall. Lots of neat suggestions for pillows -- be adventurous! Be bold.

calamityjane4 I like the cool mixed up pillows, make them different and not all the same, way cooler! You have a beautiful space, just need to add cool accents and color and plants!

thewaterbird What a great room! With some colour and personality, it'll be lovely! I like the fruit pillows you posted last. The mirror is great - maybe it needs to be slightly higher? I agree the tv should go where the plant is, and the rug needs to be centered around the fireplace. A wingback and side table in the window would be awesome. I'm looking forward to see what you do with the place.

k8an Hi, I'm now looking for a coffee table. What do you think about these? Curved or square? Most of the furniture in the living room is linear. The curved one could break up the pattern?

myepello Oh my gosh....is that a "bay window" area just crying out for 2 chairs and a small occasional table? If so put the love seat on the opposite facing. The tv looks wide....it cannot be wider than the fireplace so.....don't know. Looks like a great room to work with

k8an Hi, I would really welcome any suggestions for a coffee table. Our TV unit is high gloss black with a glass shelf. what style coffee table would suit the room? Can it be high gloss white for example? Or glass? Or timber? Look forward to reading your tips!
