Need help in decorating this living/dining room
This room is 7m by 5m approximately it has an entry door on one wall which we don't use, and it's furnished with a white corner sofa that's taking a lot of space and can't put in any other place than the actual one, a quite large square white dinning table with 8 chairs that is taking a lot of space too, I wish to add one or even two armchairs if space allows it but don't know what kind of armchairs i should use, also a TV would be really nice but again the only place where it can be fit is the wall on which there's the entry door, i dont know if it's really the best place for it, and last but not least I want to add some character to this white sterile room, make it more inviting n cozy. I do not whish to paint the walls though. Please help me as I'm really out of ideas. PS: i live in Oman and we don't have much of budget good quality furniture stores like IKEA for example, i hope you take this into consideration when making your suggestions. Many thanks,
Amina

Manon Floreat Can the living and dining areas switch places? If so, a wall mounted flat screen could go on the wall to the left of the front door . . .

You might consider some flax colored curtain panels, similar to the tan(?) in your carpet. I think it would help temper the sterile feel you're getting. I'd like to see them mounted clear to the ceiling and just graze the floor.

Amina Barri Hi Manon, thanks for your reply. Well i tried to put the sofa on the opposite wall like you're suggesting but it's larger than the wall n will bloque some of the way leading into the room by like 15 cm

Manon Floreat Oh, well that's no good. One option would be to have a custom retractable TV unit built. Here are a couple of examples featured in bedrooms. Because they are so slim, you may have room to place it as a divider between the living and dining areas. It will be tight, though.

Rotating Hidden TV

Lake Michigan House

Another option is to carve space in your wall to the left of the front door and install a recessed TV on an angle bracket. It can be covered when not in use by a piece of art, such as below.

Lakefront Residence

With either of the above options, I don't know that an arm chair will work. Do you have a photo of the wall opposite the front door? You could look into floor cushions. I notice you have a little one - they often enjoy them. Or perhaps an upholstered bench or ottoman.

West 14th Avenue

Lastly, you could consider downsizing your current living room furniture to a sofa and two arm chairs. That would free up the wall space opposite the front door for a media center and you'd have your armchairs.

You'll have to decide what's most important to you and make your decisions based on that. You have a lovely space. Perhaps others will be along with more ideas.

Amina Barri I like the idea of the upholstered ottomans i think it would work nicely and won't require much space.now because our house is a rental we can't do everything we want and we don't wanna spend a lot of money on it as well, but since this is the guest living room maybe we have to sacrifice the TV, but it would have been a nice plus. Thanks manon
Now for the ottomans any suggestions on the fabric, color, pattern? I'd like some cushions as well n some decorating pieces, I'd love to incorporate wood in the decor but don't really know what and how. Any suggestions??

Manon Floreat Your wonderful rug is a sea of opportunity for picking accent colors! It's very late on the west coast and I must go to sleep. When I awaken, I'll share some decor items with you. Good night.

ASVInteriors I wonder if you couldn't go rather original and use the workmanship available in Oman. You cannot move your furniture it seems, you want to make it cosy and yet incorporate the white.
This image is a bit extreme but it demonstrates taking the past and tradition and placing it smack in today.

Buy two or three similar rugs and hang them on the wall. 1 by the dining room, the other above your sectional. Now find a third old rug, and have this cut up into large cushions for your sectional. Finally, contrast the white on your dining room table with a chocolate wooden square tray with a low white vase and bowl.below are examples of similar set ups and how they have been addressed.

Amina Barri I like the idea of old rugs on the wall, my husband suggested the same, any ideas on the colours though?

ASVInteriors Here you either go similar colour or similar motif. Which ever you can find. I don't know if you have noticed in the image I posted, the first one, the new trend is taking old carpets and cutting them into similar patchwork carpets. On trend upcycling. These are expensive though, but if you find one online in the colours of your carpet, it will give you a very good idea of matching carpets that go with it.
From the lovely carpet you posted, you could do a cream on navy (inverse of yours) and then another which is a mid point navy and cream. I don't know if in the souk you could find an old carpet seller - I would imagine Oman is not big on second hand or old stuff, but it really is the place to find clever ideas. You could then find the carpet to cut up and turn into cushions.
Also, thinking about it you could have two poufs or ottomans made in a square in the navy carpet to contrast with your cream.
This would create an ultramodern take on traditional handicrafts

Amina Barri I guess i need to go the old Muttrah Souk and take a look and get an idea on what's available there and what are the prices. Thanks for the brilliant ideas

Manon Floreat Hi, Amina and ASVInteriors!

ASV has got some nice ideas. I particularly like the example photos that she posted. Really nice examples of taking white and making it warm.

Since, you're interested in incorporating wood into your space, I was thinking that you could go about and see if you could find a large scale wooden carving for your dining room. Some have used old doors and gates to good effect. Wood is a wonderful way to add warmth to a room. You may be able to find something in Oman. Below is an example of the idea.

Your carpet is really beautiful. And it has such color variation. You could think about taking some of the brighter colors from the rug, perhaps the magenta and green and use it for your ottomans and throw pillows. If you are interested in art, please take a look at Etsy. There is some really wonderful stuff there at every price point. Below is a link to some of the acrylics. You might consider a large scale piece above your sectional.

Below are a few options using the pink and green from your rug. I do believe that the flax color from your carpet would make a nice drapery color. I've also included a floor lamp to place next to the left of your sectional. Many spaces can benefit from a little black. Take a look, maybe it'll give you some ideas.

Melissa Eastman PICTURES! As a novice photographer pictures are always something I look for. It tells who you are and can add amazing color. Whether its paintings by local artists or your own creative photographs. A bookcase in front of the door wood be nice as long as it covered the area.
