Wheelchair accessible design
We want to build a retirement home that is wheelchair accessible. Although we are healthy now, we want to plan so we wouldn't have to leave our home should that need arise. We would like to see designs that are easily convertible to wheelchair accessible but don't look it!

Carolyn Albert-Kincl Design Universal design is what you are looking for. It is meant to sustain a family as they age in place, or as they entertain friends or family who might be in a wheelchair. If you enter "Universal design" in the search box above and then look at "ideabooks" you will find articles and plenty of photos of houses that were designed following the principles of universal design.

onthefence Search Universal Design both in Browse Rooms and Ideabooks here. There are some amazing photos. I'm a fan of universal design. Regardless of the need for wheelchair access or the abilities of the residents, I think a lot of aspects are just more functional.

dameron41 The VA has a booklet that is great for providing the needed measurements for doorways, countertops, ramps, etc...I used to do architectural modifications for my patients and found it very helpful. Don't forget issues like wrapping pipes under the sink to protect against burned knees from wheelchair restricted individuals..and, turnaround circumference for wheelchairs...,etc.

eztia The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has specific measurements for everything - wheelchair turning radius, angle of ramps, bathtub bar placement, everything.
