Replacing old kitchen island with re-designed sideboard island.
We have just downsized! Help!! Our kitchen is VERY small with an island. We brought in free standing cabinets from our former home for extra storage and the island is in the way placed in it's original direction. The floor is tiled so we don't know if there is tile under the island. There is also electricity to the island. If we remove it to add an new island, (I want to make one from an old sideboard), will we be be able to move the power and will there be tile underneath? We will need to place the new island in the opposite direction of the original island to give ample walking space in the kitchen. Please give us your best advice. Thanks!!

creeser The wiring should be able to stay in place and installed in the new island, but I doubt if there is tile underneath the cabinet. Before starting anything, I'd get a contractor in to take a look at it all.

carolannr Floors are not usually installed before cabinets so the chances of tile being under there are slim unless the island was a recent addition to the mix. Wiring could be transferred from one to another if care is taken in removing the first one but I think your out of luck with the floor.

judy Thanks soooo much! A contractor it is! I still have my heart set on the re-purposed sideboard as the island, I just want it to be right! I feel better now! This was fun....I feel like I had old friends looking out for me today!! Kind of like when I stalk the aisles at the home improvement stores at the crack of dawn to catch the pros getting their supplies....they are the nicest guys when I ask them questions about anything from plumbing to carpentry. Honestly, I should have been a contractor in this life! What I really want to learn is masonry!!!! I'm 65yrs. old and I still have lots to learn! Woo-Hoo!

Kelly You should be able to tell if there is tile under the island. Gently remove the toe kick around the base of the island and see you you see a cut edge of the tile. If it look like the tile continues under the cabinet you are most likely good to go. If you have a cut edge you know the tile does not go under the cabinet.
