Need help with the backyard
We have nothing but dirt in the backyard and weeds

Ironwood Builders Rent a root-tiller and chew it all into the soil. Go to the nursery and buy as much wildflower seed with cellulose binder as they recommend. Spread it, water it, take care of it...it is a temporary garden, though some will be perennials, most will be annuals. This buys you time to research and plan your real landscape project.

ASVInteriors Ironwood has an excellent first solution - if nothing else you are preparing the ground; you are adding nutrients to the soil and you can then plan and prepare. You might wish to lay a few pavers so that you do have a non-jungle path in the summer!
