jjdesignkloos A large area rug will help make your room look cozy and inviting...I'm thinking maybe 9x12'? Do you have 2 couches, or 1 couch and love seat? What are the measurements of your room?
here's a couple possibilities:
[houzz=Noe Valley Two]
[houzz=Talavera Tile Indoor/Outdoor Rug]
[houzz=Surya Rugs]
[houzz=pimento rug]
mic87911 The living room is 12'x18' and I have one couch along the window and one love seat along that staircase area. Thanks for the ideas. Do you think a 9x12 is still good? Or too big?
mic87911 I'm looking for something with green to incorporate the kitchen wall color (its all open concept) and the color on the curtains. Also, I have stripes on the curtains but the pillows have swirls. I have a circled mirror on the wall and the square wall art. Hoping to tie these all together if possible?
decoenthusiaste You can shop for rugs by style, color, materials, etc at homedecorators.com. A good place to begin to nail down what you like. A more urgent problem I see is your window treatments. Both tab tops and short curtains that don't kiss the floor are hindering your decor. Mount rods right at ceiling level, and make sure drapes are falling to the floor. Since the windows gets some direct sun, consider lined and/or insulated drapes. For longer lengths you may have to shop online. Country Curtains has some you may like.
travisinteriors I like your rug choice and size. I would change the window panels to white linen look, no tabs, they look dated. Some heavier material would be better.
Lynne Forrestal Have you looked at rugs.zoo.com or amazon.com or overstock.com for rugs, there are tons there in all colors and sizes. I would make the rug be the bold art for the room, you have the space to pull it off.
definitely use the colors from both rooms in a rug to tie it together. Love your colors.
Measure the space you need give or take since all rugs are different sizes from different places... not any real standard sizes. In living room I suggest that the front legs of furniture sit on the rug, then measure out from there to where you want it... I suggest leaving flooring exposed around it, and don't have the rug edge in a major walk way, or it will get worn/ dirty on that part... and it feels strange to walk on 1/2 rug and 1/2 floor too. good luck and let us know what size you decide on, maybe we can help with finding some for you to consider.
decoenthusiaste The green one would look good under the dining table. Be sure it is 4 feet wider and longer than the table though. Can you get the same patterned one in orange or tan for the living area?
ASVInteriors My two cents worth is a rug in these patterns. They are on trend, will pick up your kitchen wall colour and are still modern without being invasive
mic87911 Thank you all for your input. I didn't even think of a rug for the dining room! That green one would look nice, but it was the only color it came in. I'll measure the spaces.
mic87911 For the dining room a 4ft extra width and length wouldn't fit but a 7'x9' would be close it looks like and the living room is kind of an awkward, almost square shape, at about 8'x9'
Lynne Forrestal very nice choices... just be sure that the two rugs don't clash
I found a few too, mine are kind of OUT THERE, just thought I'd give you some ideas to get you going, but I guess you are all ready on a ROLL! good for you... are you finding sizes that work too?
that is always the hardest part for me.
Also, be sure to shop around for the rug once you find a few you want, on the internet they can be found for a wide range of prices...
mic87911 I like the circle one. My biggest concern is clashing and I'm terrible with matching the two rooms since they are open to each other. The sizes aren't too bad, it's more with matching the two and finding a pattern for each that work well.
Lynne Forrestal I don't think I'd use both the bottom ones, but maybe the two left ones??
Or one and then a stripe, or more solid toned one... not solid, but one with more of one color and just a slight design??
I've never done two rooms open to each other before... but your getting the idea of color s, and then the scales can't be the same, otherwise they compete with each other... just shop around.
and save the info that you find so you can find it again :).... these 4 are all from rugsusa.com
DIAspoton you'd better be sure you're going to love green for a long time if you commit to those green rugs. consider multi color rugs which have the green in them along with several other colors. paint is inexpensive to change with trends or moods.
MyCraftWork, LLC Have you checked out Beni Ourain rugs? We have a beautiful Vintage collection that might be of interest to you. Here is the link: http://www.mycraftwork.com/beni-ourain-azilal-rugs.html Five rugs have already been reserved within 24 hours of posting the new collection!
Tao Bellamine.
Lynne Forrestal or a little tamer??
LOL, I got carried away, went through 34 pages, out of 190 pages of rugs on one site alone!!.... now next week I need to do the same for myself.. and that is always harder than for others. :)
Lynne Forrestal Before you make final decisions, especially for the dining room, check the fabric, pile cleaning instructions... as some are thick , and would be harder to clean... there are some nice rugs that are listed as indoor/outdoor, that are suppose to clean easily. That's what I am going to try to get, especially for the kitchen dining area.... with 13 grandchildren visiting! LOL
Lynne Forrestal I didn't pay attention to prices or too closely to sizes either, so that all needs to be figured out too.
Post the ones you found, photos if you have them, I'd love to see what you found :)
Jillian Staton I think any of the rugs 4lynne found would be great - esp the circle rug withe spots - but you may have to ditch the painting with all the mauves on it.
Jillian Staton I think the painting has so much mauve in it that it wouldn't work with the rugs 4Lynne found. If you could find one with a bit of mauve in it, it would be fine (in my opinion :))
Lynne Forrestal Mic8791, what are all the colors in the painting that you want to keep?
Also, the wall the painting is on,.... that's an soft orange? then green dining room right? Is the green LIME green or a little softer green? My monitor may be showing the wrong shades of colors.
The rug you chose is very LIME... which is fine to mix shades of green , in small amounts.
The rug you chose, what is the name and where did you find it? Is it an indoor/outdoor one?
I know there are some out there that are simular to that, that are and for the dining room, that would be easy to clean.
Let me know and Ill see what I can do...
Lowes.com had a good selection of indoor/outdoor rugs... I just don't remember all the colors etc.
Lynne Forrestal Is you sofa and loveseat, brown or black? and what colors are in the pillows on the sofas? My monitor shows the photo of that room very dark so I can't tell... I was guessing Brown
Lynne Forrestal those two could work together... since there are colors in common, all colors you have I think, and there is alot of space between the rugs, what do you think... prices are decent too
Mary LOVE the "noe Valley " rug on another comment, it is green and white and has swirls..I love the flowy feeling it gives, and relaxes and softens the space. Great choice.
Lynne Forrestal Another thought do you have your furiture arranged the way you really love it? Because size of rug will depend on that too... for example, It s hard for me to judge from photos, but could you make your sofa and loveseat into a L shaped arrangement... maybe even with one of them NOT against a wall? I do see lots of doorway openings, so maybe that isn't an option. Do you have a TV in this room? I didn't see one. The rug above is a great price and is the outdoor/indoor type so easy cleaning... I thought too if you used a pattern with some green in the dining room , that would tie the rooms together.. by getting the other colors into the dining room with the rug. and maybe a flower arrangement, picture, seat cushions etc. A good rule of thumb for color is 3 colors plus neutrals, and the main color at 60%, then 2 nd color at 30% and then the 3rd color just 10%... I know. Im saying more than what you asked for. ... sorry, don't mean to be bossy :)
mic87911 Ok I'll try my best to answer all your questions. The colors in the painting are all the colors of the walls and the mauve-lilac color. I really do love the painting :-/.
The paint colors are called pumpkin spice, squish squash and wasabi. They are all Benjamin Moore colors.
We do have a tv and are just waiting for our tv stand to be delivered and the TV will go in that nook on the orange wall so it will be away from the rug. I was thinking an 8x9 or around that size will go in the living room on the love seat and coffee table side. The coffee table is quite large. And the sofas are brown and the pillows have swirls of brown and yellow-gold like the yellow wall.
I really love the amazon rug you found for the living room. I'm not dead set on the green geometric one, I just want to find flow but not matchy matchy.
Mary, which noe valley rug?
Also, I think this is the most functional way to place the sofas.
I also loveeeee the bamboo wall pictures. Our hardwood is bamboo so that is so funny you found those! I am not a huge fan of the floral pattern though. I'm more into the geometric shapes or contemporary designs.
Hmmmm what can we use for the dining room to match your amazon rug?
Kathryn Peltier Design I think that before you decide on a rug, you should rethink your seating arrangement. Right now, it looks like the traffic pattern runs right through the middle- is that right? I would advise creating an L-shape seating layout by bringing your loveseat over at a right angle with the couch and then putting the coffee table in the middle (obviously, lol!) It looks like you would probably have room to put a sofa table behind the couch (in front of the window) where you could add a lamp and some accessories, plus it would pull the couch into the middle of the room a bit more for better TV viewing, Perhaps add a large arcing floor lamp in the corner between the couch and loveseat. When you decide on a rug, just make sure it is large enough so that the front legs of both the couch and the loveseat will sit on it. It's a very nice room - nice colors!
Kathryn Peltier Design I haven't read through all the posts, but I did happen to see that you were trying to stay within a $500-600 budget for both a LR and DR rug. I have just been looking for rugs on another discussion, and the best deals - by far - are the indoor/outdoor variety. You might be able to stay within this budget, even using 8x12 rugs. One more suggestion: very often you can find exceptional oriental rugs on Ebay in what is referred to as "palace size". These are usually rugs that are 9x13 or bigger. They sell for a lot less because most rooms can't take a rug that large. I realize it's not the look you were going for, and the colors are wrong - geez, I'm batting 1,000 so far - BUT it still might be worth keeping in mind. You never know what you might find! P.S. I like the green trellis rug you posted for the DR.
Lynne Forrestal Kathryn, Hi from 4lynne, I see you found rug dilemma too... LOL
mic..... , Kathryn has been helping for days and days, months maybe, on another redo on houzz, and I also have been looking at rugs for several days for another person... I got interested in helping since I also will need help very soon :)
Lynne Forrestal Mic, the rug you like for living room, is that the last geo one? amazon for $99 for a 7 x 10, I think size??
just want to be sure which one we are trying to go with for the dining area... The green in the dining area, looks not as lime as the rug you choose for there, am I correct or is it my monitor color? it looks to be softer and a little more yellow green, is that correct?
Lynne Forrestal the two above, not really good together, but If you want to tentatively decide on one, find it in the correct size you need, then we can look for one to work with that one.. in the right size for the other area....
Or choose two you like... let us know and we can help find the other coordiating one... just an idea. Its hard to find both at once, not knowing for sure if you'll like ANY that we find :)
mic87911 I would love to use the couches in an L shape but I don't think that will work because there is this partition from where the fridge is in the kitchen that would close off the whole open concept. See photo. Sorry it's dark and excuse all the boxes. If I put the love seat there everyone will have to go around the kitchen and entrance of the house to get to the living room. Then the flow is ruined :-( although that would of mad everything easier.
4lynne...as for the green of the wall it does have more yellow in it that just lime green and I'm not sure if its because its next to the yellow or just that wasabi color.
I also read bad reviews about that $99 amazon rug saying how it arrived soiled for everyone. Man what a dilemma this has really turned out to be!!!
Lynne Forrestal With more pattern in the livingroom, then maybe something simpler like the idea of the nove two one, just solid with simpler lines in it for the dining room.... that would work... and the simple lines might be better without being too busy under the table and chairs legs. If you want to play up the mauve that second one does look good, just don't want you to get too many colors going in balance amounts or they will compete with each other instead of compliment each other ( throughout the entire area , not just the rugs I mean)
Have you tried, putting the love seat where the boxes are L to the couch, move the couch down some on that wall with a table where the boxes are? Cuts off some of the flow but looks like there still is a wide opening, and view over the loveseat to dining room is still there??
mic87911 This is like the third time I write a comment and it gets deleted! Errrr! Ok I like your idea of the more one or two color rug for the LR. And then just finding one for the DR.
Lynne Forrestal Trying it , different ways, and live with it for a day or two... take photos ... have fun with it!
Enjoy your company.... but don't be surprised when you check back in if you've got more help than you need or want! LOL!!
mic87911 No, I love this help. I can't wait until its all over and I find some rugs :-) maybe I'll have to get those glass bamboo pictures as a reward for this hard work ;-)
Lynne Forrestal I said, more pattern in LR and less design in dining room, but you said opposite, so you think simpler in LR and more design in DR, is that right? ... just want to know what I'm looking for :)
Lynne Forrestal I thought so I know I saw it somewhere, but couldn't find it either... then I saw it in another room on houz.com as a featured room... that room was from two years ago... so I think it might be discountued... Mary found that one originally, so wonder if she found that on houz.com or if she found in a shop for sale??
Lynne Forrestal mic, where I saw it, was in houzz, browse rooms, then I searched for livingrooms with green rugs, and it was a ways down, but showed up, but it said the original post was two years ago
364robertferrie I would do a cream shag rug , you should find a painting similar to the rug , that would look great! You could use the green as your accent colour for pillows and other decor.
Mary I didn't find that rug, it was a comment up top by Asvinters...I agreed that I thought it was the perfect rug. I searched and also found on houzz, but there isn't any info of where to buy it. I find a lot of incredible rugs at Home Goods store, do you have one near you? The prices there are great too.
Lynne Forrestal Sorry mary I didn't go back far enough, I looked her up but that rug isn't in any of her designs, so I think she found that photo on houzz.com.... If Im wrong, please share the brand name or where to find it please... Asvinters?
Lynne Forrestal The material makes it easy to clean I think, so it would be good in the dining room, and it would tie the orange from living room into that area too.
Lynne Forrestal Sorry, It's late and I ve been shopping with sister and mother for 14 hours today out of town, getting punchy LOL, Have lots to catch up on , but will try to think and give suggestions tommorrow
Lynne Forrestal Here's one to consider, I put them side by side here, found a few, posted so we could try them,,, all from amazon.com..lets see how they go
mic87911 Love them all! I was thinking of the first two Lynne put. The sizes were roughly 7x9 for the dining table and 8x9 for the dining room although a 7x9 might work too.
Lynne Forrestal all that I found were on amazon.com.... mic87911 yes that works, I do like the black swirls a little better in the one I had found thoug... but either will work
Lynne Forrestal iT SAYS THAT THEY MAKE RUGS TO YOUR SPECIAL ORDER SIZE, SO CONTACT THE COMPANY FOR A PRICE QUOTE IN THE SIZE AND COLOR YOU WANT, DOUBLE CHECK THE COLOR OF THE SWIRL, ON ANOTHER SITE, THIS RUG IS SHOWN WITH A DARK GREEN SWIRL, THE ONE i SEE LOOKS BLACK, AND ANOTHER SITE IT LOOKS GRAY SWIRL.
Lynne Forrestal mic87911, how much is the rug you decided on, the first one? for what size? I ask, because I think I saw the same one at shopko.com, so you may want to compare prices.
mic87911 Ok so now I'm sad again....the two rugs I love, I'm afraid are a bit too big for the space....and the dark green LR rug only comes in that size and the multi color DR rug may be too small if I go down one size. HELP! Is it better to be a tad too big?
Lynne Forrestal How much too big and in which direction?, for example, in the living room, could it go under the sofa some? in the dining room , is it too wide or long? or both? that green swirl, with dark swirl that I had found can be made in different sizes, according to the website, so you could contact them with your measurements and see what the price would be...
mic87911 I emailed that light green with the black swirls...just waiting for a reply....in the DR the 7x10 would be too big in both directions but still fit. In the DR the rug would go under the love seat but it will extend too long across the LR into the way of traffic, which I was told to stay away from. I was using the rug before each picture in my previous post for that corresponding room. The rugs would fit but I'm afraid they would be too large
Lynne Forrestal In LRM, what would it look like if you just had it from front of loveseat out to just past the coffee table? would that look right to you... if so what size would that be? maybe 4 x 5 or so? not all rugs are standard sizes I noticed, I always thought there were standards... so it gets very confusing.
mic87911 Yeah I noticed that too.....would it look ok and proportionate to make it only extend that far? If so that would work but that rug is only in an 8x10 so I have to find another one or wait for that company to reply.
Lynne Forrestal I don't know.
Its hard for me to tell from the photos, Usually there is a rug with the furniture front legs on it, and the furniture is in a group, kind of like the L shape we talked about earlier. With the sofa and love seat across the room from each other, ( I needed to do that also in my room) I put the rug in front of sofa and left the wide walk way width in front of the love seat, with the table in front of the sofa since that was the larger piece and more focal point than the love seat... My room is just over 12 feet wide.... and it looked fine. Maybe not from a professional designers point of view, but from ordinary people it was fine :)
Maybe you could take a blanket or sheet and fold it into the right size, lay it out and see what it looks like?
Lynne Forrestal the 8 x 1 that's the geometric multi colored rug correct? Who is the manufacturer on that one?
I could help search more for you too. Also, another idea, check your city for a custom rug shop, perhaps they could cut and bind the rug for you for a fee.... you could buy the larger one and have it cut down... and maybe even get another runner or small rug out of it too.
mic87911 Those are great ideas Lynne, a sheet would work to see. Yeah I wanted the L but with the space, this is what I like. And the couch has two end tables so the love seat gets the coffee table lol the end tables won't fit on the other side. The 8x10 is the green swirls, the 7x10 is the multi but it comes in 5x7 too. I'll add the amazon links.
mic87911 Ok, I decided I can only do one rug with the patterns I picked because they are just too big for the dining room space. So for now its one rug for the LR. Which pattern would work best in the space?
Lynne Forrestal Oh my.... I hope someone else weighs in on this one, I like them both... LOL
Just depends on if you want bolder , then use the bottom one... but my first thought is to bring the green from dining room into the living room with the green one, and find another that has the living room colors to tie into the dining room at a later date.
Are they both easy to clean? that would be a factor to consider when deciding ( at least to me it would)
Let me know what you decide... and when you do, you can help me find art for my kitchen LOL
mic87911 The green one says easy to clean and the multicolor is stain resistant...go figure....perfect for what I needed them both for....if only the multi color had a custom size!
here's my kitchen post link... I remember at one time you liked the one with the circle dots in various colors..did you decided against that one for sure? Its posted above from 2 weeks ago
Lynne Forrestal Did you call around your city and see if anyone does alterations on rugs? I wouldn't think it would be too difficult to alter the size and re- bind the edges.... call a carpet store to start, and if they don't do it, then see if they know of anyone... I'd love for you to have both of the rugs you love!
Lynne Forrestal Mic87911, checking in on your progress :)... did you find someone to alter the rug? Did you order one , which one? My rug is suppose to be here tomorrow sometime... yeah!!! still don't have my table yet though
Lynne Forrestal what size did you finally decide that you need? I tried to look back, but have only a few minutes and couldn't find it. I just saw this one at 80% off... lighter green, but thought of you.. I wish I had a place for it!!
It is a 5 x 8 size, wool, regular price is $580 sale price is $116
http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/clearancerugs/rugs-usa-2083/lt-green/200XMP2083-508.html
mic87911 So sorry I've been slacking Lynne. I have been really busy! I think what I might end up doing is going with the multi color rug for now. That way in the future I can always get one to match it. What do you think? Thanks for your suggestion!
Lynne Forrestal That sounds good! No apologies needed :), we have lives outside of houzz!!! LOL
I just took photo of my new table/chairs and rug, in kitchen, drapes not up yet.. Will post on my dilema !!
Lynne Forrestal Just got notice through email that this rug ( multi colored) is on sale for less. I think than what You had seen... check it out, different sizes. 5 x7 around $64.. 3'9 x 4'9 is $50 7'6 x 10'6" is $145
here's a couple possibilities:
[houzz=Noe Valley Two]
[houzz=Talavera Tile Indoor/Outdoor Rug]

I know this is a rug question you have, but was shopping and saw this... may be way off from your taste, but I thought it was to neat to not mention to you!
Is this your style?
The paint colors are called pumpkin spice, squish squash and wasabi. They are all Benjamin Moore colors.
We do have a tv and are just waiting for our tv stand to be delivered and the TV will go in that nook on the orange wall so it will be away from the rug. This is so much harder than I thought! Maybe I should pick solids LOL
Have you tried, putting the love seat where the boxes are L to the couch, move the couch down some on that wall with a table where the boxes are? Cuts off some of the flow but looks like there still is a wide opening, and view over the loveseat to dining room is still there??
Also, I can try seeing if we can rearrange the couches when my fiancé gets home but I don't know if it will cut in to the DR chairs and then the only entrance to the LR will be on the one front corner. I'm having company this weekend so I may need to take a break and start over with his rug dilemma next week.
I feel like we are making progress! Thank you everyone!
Enjoy your company.... but don't be surprised when you check back in if you've got more help than you need or want! LOL!!
What about this for the living room? It's green but a darker green?
Mary can you tel mic87911 ?
I found one! What do you all think? Now I just don't know which room to use it for and what to match with it?

this is a 5 x 8 rug, so will need to find in another size, I thought the living room may be able to use this size, I couldn't remember at the time
Its hard for me to tell from the photos, Usually there is a rug with the furniture front legs on it, and the furniture is in a group, kind of like the L shape we talked about earlier.
I could help search more for you too. Also, another idea, check your city for a custom rug shop, perhaps they could cut and bind the rug for you for a fee.... you could buy the larger one and have it cut down... and maybe even get another runner or small rug out of it too.
Just depends on if you want bolder , then use the bottom one... but my first thought is to bring the green from dining room into the living room with the green one, and find another that has the living room colors to tie into the dining room at a later date.
Are they both easy to clean? that would be a factor to consider when deciding ( at least to me it would)
Let me know what you decide... and when you do, you can help me find art for my kitchen LOL
here's my kitchen post link... I remember at one time you liked the one with the circle dots in various colors..did you decided against that one for sure? Its posted above from 2 weeks ago
