My Backyard needs an entire makeover. Help!
We have this ugly concrete retaining wall along the back of our yard. Our Neighbor paid over 8 grand to have theirs redone. We can't do that. So we need to hide it. We also have a tiny concrete slab patio. We would like to turn this into a backyard that would be inviting and nice to spend time in and entertain in. We need help! We had a bunch of dead bushes and trees removed from the back wall area. We need a serious makeover.

claudiann Could you paint the wall green so you couldn't see it through the plants! I would use a variety of flowering shrubs of differing heights: rose of Sharon for height, ornamental grasses of different heights, butterfly bush, some box woods kept small. Azalea. forsythia, lilac, you could use them all and have color for three seasons. Hang some colorful bird houses on the fence.

ASVInteriors Alternatively, buy some natural meadow seed mix, scatter it in your yard with some additional soil and then let the natural plants grow. Mow paths between them. It is cheap, creative, feeds the soul with nutrients, and as some of these plants grow quite high, in different colours, they are good for pollinators and wildlife.

shamo1 I totally agree, with one proviso; because you have a great retaining wall already, utilize it as a backing for a raised flower bed in which to plant your grasses, flowers and bushes. Perhaps add a vine. You can easily do a raised bed yourself. In the long run you will appreciate how easy it is to maintain. Just remember to use lots, minimum 6", mulch to keep weeds down. As for the fence, I would not paint it unless I had to. The gray look is fine with the right plants in front. Nice big yard, by the way.
