Dining room wallpaper removed, now what? Need paint help.
Large, formal dining room measures 12.5 X 17. Furniture, carpet and drapes must stay which is why I am having problems choosing paint.

Furniture is dark Colonial Chippendale/ Queen ann style.

Wall 1 has large bay window facing North/Northwest. I have two drapery panels that match chair seats for each side of the bay window.

Wall 2 has built in china cabinets with window seat in center. Faces north east.

wall 3 has opening into Kitchen and an interior window (also facing kitchen). Under window I have a sofa table with 2 stools (not shown)

wall 4 has opening into foyer and fireplace (non working, faux).

The carpet is an oriental with dark green background and shades of a taupe with lavender undertones.

All fabric is an ivory tone on tone stripe with yellow tones.

Bottom has wainscoting which I was planning to paint decorators white.

I have a large mirror for over the faux fireplace and I have two tall buffet lamps that go on sofa table ( lamps do not have to stay.

Some items (single stools under sofa table and buffet lamps) were moved out of room for wall paper removal.

I have picked out samples of Monroe Bisque and Elephant Tusk to try.

hyweld A light beige and grey mix? I like Duluxs range of neutrals and chalky/grey/beige paint mixes. It depends on what your trying to achieve.

hyweld A more traditional choice would be dark reds however the fanciest Houses of the 17th (Chippendale) and early Victorian period had the most exotic if colour schemes. A classic pairing for example were dark mahogany and walnuts with bright yellows. Green and white were another choice. Formal dining rooms can be boringness as I said before it depends of what your trying to achieve. Hope I helped :)

hyweld A modern interpretation of the aforementioned style

Judy M Thank you for your comments. I want to tone down the formality of the room a bit, keeping in mind that the furniture and built ins are very formal.
hyweld A personal favourite
hyweld The addition of family photos or comfortable seating furniture can do that, a stack of cushions that sit on the bay window can be used for normal life, and removed for dinner parties and the such

Judy M Thank you. It is the paint color I am struggling with. It needs to coordinate with drapery fabric and carpet. I am looking for neutral colors.
Judy M any professional help on my paint color?
judyg Hey, Jude, not professional, but experienced. Above the chair rail, not paint, but grasscloth. I don't think the woodwork should be so white. Hard to tell from a monitor, maybe Acadia white? I know you want to paint, but my first inclination is grasscloth. Otherwise, something dark…could you do a really dark purple or green?
Judy M Has to be paint. I love grass cloth but I have it in a bedroom and just paid to have old wallpaper removed, ( and remodeled a bathroom and laundry room) so paying for wallpaper hanging isn't gonna fly by the "budget master".

I have green in kitchen. Don't wanna go too dark, really just want to time down the yellow tone in the drape and chair fabric.

I have two paint colors to try ( elephant tusk and Monroe bisque) and then will pick trim color.

Thanks for commenting. I'd love to can the drapes but then chairs need recovering. :(
2 months ago ·
Keitha Hey Judy M, I agree with Judyg that grasscloth would be beautiful but if you don't want to go that route I recommend a paint color that will provide a little more contrast to the wainscoting . Maybe just a shade or two darker. Love your room...so much character!!! These pictures give you the ideas of the grass cloth and If you would consider a neutral rug your look could be very similar ?
Stacy Smith If the carpet is staying then I'd pick something in the shade of that aqua. The room looks formal and cold to me because it's all neutral with the dark furniture. The contrast is very stark. I think some depth of color would help warm it up considerably. And instead of white on the woodwork, I'd go cream. Also, I'd have as many candles as I could get my hands on. Candlelight seems to make everything more cozy. Don't be afraid of color!
Judy M The room was just stripped if wallpaper so there is no paint color on top half of wall, so that's why it looks cold and without contrast. Plus, the drapes and accessories have been removed, until we choose paint color.

We're close to retirement so I don't want to commit to any wallpaper and then have a realtor tell me to take it down. We're not sure if we'll be here 5 yrs or 10 at this point.
Oriental is very good quality but was picked to go with wallpaper that was removed, and I now find that working around it ( and the existing fabric also picked because it went with wallpaper) is a challenge.
Hopefully I'll find a paint color that works, I'm trying not to have to try 50 different colors to get the right one.

carolins Hi Judy M,
beautiful dining room. Love the windows.
What about this goldtone from Benjamin Moore (aptly called: goldtone) http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/oc-112#ce_s=goldtone

Or if you look at the sherwin-williams site, they have their colours divided in cool neutrals, warm neutrals, different whites.... perhaps you can find your shade of paint there.
http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/

Different lighting fixtures could make the room less formal. Also... the swag/drape is the almost definition of 'formal', so if you could remove that entirely or do a straighter one (sorry, not English, so not sure what the right word is :-)), it would have an effect on the feel of the room.
Judy M Thank you, I will look at that paint color.

On the bay window, we had 2 drape panels on either side of window with a large swag treatment (similar to the one you mentioned on my other window) and we are removing the large swag and just replacing the side panels. Don't have that option on the window seat treatment, so it is either have no treatment on that window or the one showing.

As mentioned I did not want to get new treatments because the chairs are covered with same fabric. The person that made the drapes did a wonderful job, they are lined and interlined with bump cloth, making them drape beautifully.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.

lpmenache Good Morning, Very nice room, furniture and rug. It does not matter how long you will be in the house. choose what you want because the next buyer is going to change it anyway. thus i would pick a color you like from the rug and paint the walls above the chair rail that color and then choose a white tone that compliments it. It does not matter wah the realtor or HGTV says, neutral is not always better.
Judy M Thanks. At this time I am trying to choose what's not going to break the bank. We have just remodeled a full bath, a laundry room. And a bedroom.

My plan was just to remove the wallpaper and "spruce up" the room a bit. Don't want to change the drapes or carpet, so looking for nice wall cover that will blend well with those items and flow well to adjoining rooms.
Judy M Oops, should read "nice wall color"
Judy M That's a pretty color. Have to see if it works with carpet and I have a green in the kitchen, right off the dining room.
I'll ck that color against both.
Thanks for commenting.
soberg How about a close up of your rug? Then I can pick a color for you.
Judy M There is a close up photo of the rug above, I am out and can't take another right now. A close up of drapery fabric is also on the chair photo above.
Thank you.
handymam I think picking a lighter version of the blue in your rug would be beautiful for your upper walls and a cream or grey for below.

And may I suggest that your may want to recover the seats of the chairs with a whatever that "rust" color is in the rug? It isn't hard to do at all. Just a screw driver to take off the seat and a staple gun and fabric. I did my chairs after 15 years, (I had the same plain fabric as you) and wondered why I hadn't done it sooner.
carolins I see what you mean about the swag, it does drape beautifully. But perhaps if you could use the fabric that now makes the swag to have a valance? Something like these?
Judy M It he seat cushions have a welt on them that would require a professional and cause a drapery fabric change.

My carpet background color is green, so it must be reading differently on your monitor.

I know I would have many more choices if I didn't keep fabric and carpet, but that is not in the picture right now. Bathroom remodel took a bundle!
Judy M Carolina,
I have considered that option. I have more fabric from the swag that was over bay window.
I'll make the decision once paint is up and room is done,
2 months ago · ·
handymam Hmm, looked blue to stacy smith too, lol. :)
carolins Hehe... I'm seeing a blue carpet here too.
Which again proves that judging colours from photos and monitors is almost impossible :-) Ah well, whatever paint colour you choose, just do a tester first on a large sheet of white cardboard (poster board?) and place it against all the walls, look at it in different lights and then you can see if it's the right colour for your room.

A soft greenish blue or blueish green for your walls?
michigammemom Judy M, you noted that you have green in an adjoining room. Take a look at this color combination that utilizes Wilmington Tan in a dining room with similar white wainscoting. Love your built-in china cupboards and window seat!
barblt001 What about Mill Springs Blue from Benjamin Moore or something close to it? Should complement your rug. It would be very nice with white wainscoting below and a comfortable colour for a dinning area.
carolins I have to put the mill springs blue on my pinterest board, so I won't forget it. Beautiful colour.
Judy M michi
Good one! That might be a contender. Worried it is a bit dark for my room, but in a dining room, that can be a good thing!
Judy M Too much blue in Mills Spring.
I think my carpet photo is showing blue on monitors, it is green background.

Anxious to get some samples on the wall this weekend!

Stay tuned to this channel for breaking news!!! LOL

Judy M Monroe bisque is a very strong possibility! Just sampled it in 2 places on wall. Have to wait until nighttime to check it again. And try some trim color with it.
If this is the color husband will have the room done by Sunday night.
Fingers crossed.

Judy M The Monroe Bisque is going up!
I couldn't tell much at night because the wainscot isn't white yet, we'll see.

Most of the walls are broken up by windows or openings so I don't think any wall will look too dark.

I think we might highlight the detail on the FP with the Bisque color and paint the rest White.

Any thoughts on that?

And I want to paint the old wooden rod and finials. Not sure what color. It is currently a gold color with a little white wash on it.
No other gold is in the room.
Light fixture and cabinet knobs are silvertone.
Judy M ...
carolins Glad you found the colour that you like. Do you have a photo of the fireplace? It's not in the ones you posted, or am I missing something?
About the wooden rod and finials, I'm sorry... I can't come up with a bright idea for that :-) Other than painting it to match the wood of the dining table or just plain white.
Judy M The fireplace is faux, a mantle that provides a focal point once against the wall in the room.

It has raised detail that I thought would be nice to highlight with wall color.

I am trying to tone down the yellowish cast of the ivory drapes and worried that a white rod will only a accentuate that more.

Thinking a matte black against the Monroe Bisque or do you black is too dark? I do have a dark bronze framed mirror for over the fireplace.
Judy M I should add that this is not a type of electric FP, it does not function.
carolins Hmm... I'm thinking...

No, I don't think you should highlight the detail in the fireplace. It won't add to the more contemporary look you are going for.

The curtain rods: matte black would be good I think. I was looking for some inspiration for your curtain rods and came across this ideabook. It has a couple of photos of very dark rods against lighter walls so you can get an idea:

lovliny Your carpet looks like a teal green on my screen and I would suggest a paler shade of teal for the upper walls and cream for lower portion. I think cream will work better than white with your fabric and your window panels will stand out against a colored wall.

Judy M UPDATE: Room is painted. Monroe Bisque on top and decorator's white on wainscoting.

We have determined that the china cabinets would benefit from a fresh coat of paint as well. Our cabinet person is coming to look at all the doors about spraying them and then husband will paint the frames.

We painted the drapery rod black and I love it. We also hung the new mirror over the FP. I am now on the hunt for other accessories and 2 buffet lamps.

I so wish I took a picture before the wall paper and the swag valance came down.

I will update pictures as soon as we finish accessories.
Judy M Update:
Once we painted, the china cabinets looked dingy, so we are having our cabinet maker spray the doors (12 of them) and husband will paint the entire framing of the wall to wall unit.

Once that is done, we're finished.

Judy M UPDATE: DIning room 95% complete. BEFORE PHOTOS ARE ABOVE IN THE POST.

We took the photos after the wallpaper was taken down, so I don't have a true "before" photo. But the bay window had a formal swoopy valance (similar to the one shown on other window in before pics)

We kept and re hung the long drapes using new rings we bought and re-purposed the rod by painting it and the new rings black. Wall color is BM Monroe Bisque, lower half is Decorator's White.

We also kept the existing furniture and carpet. Mirror is new.

We spent less than $1000 including wallpaper removal, paint, drapery rings and having the china cabinet doors sprayed. My husband did all the rest of the painting.

I'm still looking for a "statement" centerpiece for table.

We're happy with the "spruce up".

The black shades provide a lovely accent.

I look forward to seeing the "statement" centerpiece for table that you choose.

LB Interiors Love the new room! So glad you painted the mantle white and did not add fabric to the bench seat window. You could add a couple of decorator pillows at the window seat area. Maybe something with the green found in the carpet.
Aja Mazin BM Monroe Bisque goes so well with your lovely rug and curtains.

Is the field of your rug blue?
[I thought green had been mentioned in a previous comment upthread.]

I ask because I am preparing to finally tackle our dining room which is presently a hodge podge of odds and ends.
Judy M The background color of carpet is green.

The Monroe Bisque looks great with black accents and I like the contrast with the white wainscoting.
It's a calm relief from the previous wallpaper I had, that was nice but we needed a change.

It also looks very nice with the blue and white pottery.

Glad you like it.
Try a sample!

travisinteriors Paint walls Pewter by Benjamin Moore. It's a gray blue, very nice. Add dove gray panels to large window, on end only don t cover whole window. Over small window remove and replace with the same gray panel, but wrap around rod, and let it hang one one side. In pic your seats look cream? If so replace with a dark gray stripe. Easy to do yourself. Leave all trim white as is.

LB Interiors @heavenlysons2 Faux fireplace can be found usually, home improvement centers, online JCPenney, Home Decorators.com and others

Judy M My fireplace is from an old home, it has a wood surround ( the white part) and then another wood piece that is painted to look like marble and then the "firebox" is actually black metal that is shaped like a firebox would be and attached.
It does not work (is not electric or have any fake logs) it is just a focal point.
I guess they used to have these in houses for some purpose because there is a hole in the bottom of the metal..
It also came with a wooden "hearth" piece painted like marble but we had to remove it.

When we found this in an antique store, the marble part was covered in peel and stick brown and gold tiles. I removed those by heating with hair dryer.
I knew it would look good because I had already found another one a few years before in even better condition (no peel and stick) and that one is in my bedroom.
Much nicer than any I've seen at
JCP etc.
